You will be playing exactly the same version as those current members that download the patches.
Like you have said, you get some nice little bits with the retail version (maps, etc), but the actual game will be the same for everyone.

The retail pack will include a large printed map of the western Europe game area, based on the latest TGPO mapping techniques and data, probably including some data-input from the Rats' terrain database. Some of us think that map will be very useful to the gaming experience.
Of course, TGPO probably will offer similar map-files on his website in the future in return for a moderate donation...but maybe his independent files won't have integeration with Rat-originated data, and of course if you get a raw map file you have to either have your own large-format printer or print it as a bunch of small sheets and tape or glue them together.
Personally, I'm going to buy the box, but that's just my choice.
For me the manual is going to be a must. Downloading the game is great, but you get very little help on how to play.
The manual is going to be crucial for new players (and some old!)

Sres makes a good point. WWIIOL, because it utilizes complex simulations of real world weapons and real world physics, probably is the most knowledge-intensive commercial video game ever, and by a large margin. There's a lot to learn here about historical weapons, tactics, organization, and even geography if you want to be maximally good at every possible game role. It's often said that this game has an extremely steep learning curve for new players. The new manual could be very helpful.
