The former.

See some of the other threads here in this Forum, though, for discussions of why some individuals are choosing to buy the retail version.

This is a reliable answer: you don't/won't have to buy the retail version if you already have the present version and are a subscriber, or if you buy the present version now and subscribe. Patches to the current version are free and automatic, and the patch that existing-game owners will get will be code-identical to what the retail buyers will get.

But you may want to buy the retail version--for instance, by pre-ordering it now via one of the online sellers to assure that you get it immediately upon availability. Lots of us are doing so.

The retail version is going to come with a bunch of stuff that folks will enjoy having, and two things--an extensive new game manual and a printed large-format game map--that many folks particularly want.

JWilly is very reliable, he's just professorial, which drives me batty ... just like the rest of the pantheon does , doh ;)

So here it is:

Download = Battleground Europe in all functional ways

But ... retail box got:

1) coolio big manual on paper
2) coolio big wall map of the theatre of operations
3) possibly retail box version will have a coolio movie on intro that download version won't have
4) if you pre-order the retail box it makes the retailers think , hmm maybe we should promote this or set aside more shelf space for it --- which means more players which increases long term viability of the game you will play -- which also helps you to find that tank support at 4 am in the morning when you need it. Hmm also means that the enemy has more, doh!

Once in-game should be the same. Logging on, install, should be the same. Hard Disk footprints may vary (movie on the retail cds, but also can maybe leave some of that on the CD plus more -- neutral).

5) Retail owners get to give free trials to any friends, one trial per friend though.

This is like an AD&D spell called Friends, it raises your charisma and increases the number of friends you can have, until you become so popular you run for Koffi Annan's UN position, but are ousted when it is found out that all you do is play Battleground Europe when in your office -- though it did take them 10 years to figure it out since didn't seem to make much of a noticeable difference from Annan's performance, ahem.

Ok so that's the way I look at it as an outsider. Have friends or reduce emissions of package delivery trucks and make environmental friends happy, who of course hug trees and don't play the game. Tough decision.
