  1. If only you could ignore the whole of Off Topic then the 'New Posts' link would actually be useful.
  2. That would suck, since automatically growing grass and weeds as you move is annoying and pointless. Try running in your garden to see how realistic it is.
  3. It should be a client setting so the user can choose. The fact that many people are choosing to turn it off speaks volumes. It does nothing for me and never has done. I'd be quite happy if it was binned entirely, but someone else might like to leave it switched on I suppose.
  4. Looks pretty good. If it was me I would probably be looking at the 5850 or 5870 though.
  5. Out of the box, mine worked perfectly for three years and three months before failing suddenly and completely, which is an acceptable lifespan for a device having a hard life, in my opinion. It maxed out at 70C under full load (at 2560x1600), which is within limits. I'm not convinced that manipulating the fan speed would have made that much difference. The temperature inside the case was far higher with the 8800 GTS than with the overclocked 5850 I replaced it with - so the new card should help the lifespan of all the other components. CPU, disk and motherboard temps are all down significantly since I replaced the 8800, so much so that I was able to remove two of the four 120mm case fans and it's still cool. No doubt I will have to put them back when I refresh the motherboard/CPU/RAM in the near future, but for now, it's made a big difference in noise level.
  6. Indeed it was. My 8800 GTS failed a couple of days before yours, with the same symptoms. I replaced it with a 5850 with Vapor-X and the PC now runs so cool I have removed two of the four case fans, and it's still cool under full load.
  7. It was aimed at specific issues which Valve already raised, so whether or not it makes any difference to other games remains to be seen.
  8. My Windows machine is back up and running now so it's not a problem for me anymore, but here's the detail in case it helps you find a fix for someone else: Model Name: MacBook Pro Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 6 MB Memory: 4 GB Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz Boot ROM Version: MBP52.008E.B05 SMC Version (system): 1.42f4 Here's the graphics adapter info: Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT Type: GPU Bus: PCIe PCIe Lane Width: x16 VRAM (Total): 512 MB Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de) Device ID: 0x0647 Revision ID: 0x00a1 ROM Revision: 3436 gMux Version: 1.7.10 Displays: Color LCD: Resolution: 1920 x 1200 Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888) Main Display: Yes Mirror: Off Online: Yes Built-In: Yes DELL U2410: Resolution: 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888) Mirror: Off Online: Yes Rotation: Supported Connection Type: DisplayPort Television: Yes Let me know if you would like me to try anything else.
  9. It has a 9600M GT with 512MB RAM. I did a bit more experimentation in case it rings any bells. If I only have the laptop screen on, it works fine, but using an external keyboard and mouse with the laptop screen doesn't really work from a usability point of view, and I don't fancy trying to play using the trackpad. If I have both screens on but mirrored, it doesn't work - no resolution choice is offered. If I have both screens on unmirrored and select the laptop screen it works from the point of view of offering resolution choices and running the game on the laptop screen. If I have both screens on unmirrored and select the external monitor in settings, it doesn't offer resolution choices, but it does start the game at 1920x1200 on the external monitor (the laptop screen is blanked though). I tried this offline for a while but it wasn't really working out. As soon as you move the mouse a bit you just go into permanent rotation and have to hit escape to be able to get the mouse back onto the external screen to stop spinning round. As already said, if I just have the external monitor on then it offers no resolution choices and runs the game at a very low resolution. Hopefully my 5850 and PSU will be arriving shortly so I can get my Windows gaming rig up and running again
  10. I'm having problems on a 2009 17" MBP (my Windows PC is knackered so I thought I would try the Mac version while I wait for a new video card to arrive). When I click the Settings button, there are no resolutions listed at all in the resolution dropdown. If I start the game, it's running at 800x600 or something terrible. I tried editing the preferences file to set it to 1920x1200, and it made no difference - it's still running at a low resolution which is unplayable. I'm using an external 1920x1200 monitor via Displayport if that makes any difference.
  11. When RAM fails completely it often stops the machine even getting to the BIOS. Try booting with just one stick of RAM to see if it gets to the BIOS. You can use a process of elimination to see which one is faulty by trying to boot with it, if that's what it is. Happened to me last week.
  12. Maybe the PSU failed?
  13. I haven't had a single CTD for a couple of years, but since 1.29 it CTDs in the middle of despawning about one time in fifty. Then you get the CTHL rigmarole on the next launch.
  14. It's like looking at the world through a wide angle lens, or one of those rear view mirrors that says "objects are closer than they appear". Up close, things in the centre are a little smaller than before but acceptably so. However they get very small very quickly with added distance. The geometric distortion at the edges is pretty weird as well.
  15. It does seem to work for me on the rare occasions that I use it. There is an unfortunate side effect though. If everyone else leaves the mission, the mission gets closed. There should be an exception that you still get given leader if you are the last one on the mission really.
