Suggestions on 512mb video card...

6 posts in this topic

I currently have a Nvidia PCI express x16 Geforce 6800 256mb video card overcolocked using Nturbo. Rest of important stuff is 1,024mb ram, and 3.4 P4 processor. I've looked at Newegg.com and came across these two 512mb video cards and was wondering what everyone thought:

Should I go with 8500GT or 8600GT? I admit I'm clueless about video cards but I want to stick with Nvidia. If anyone can find a faster 512mb card that doesn't cost over $200 then please let me know.

Thanks...

IMO there isn't any gforce cards with 512 of memory worth buying for under $200. The 7950's with 512 are pretty much off the market. None at newegg. The prices they have listed are $250 anyway.

All the mid range new gforce cards are crippled with a 128bit memory bus unless you buy one of the 8800 series. The cheapest being about $279 right now and that doesn't even have 512megs of vram.

ATI still has good x1950pro's with 512 of ram for under $200. $159 with mail in rebate.

It's a really good card. This is the nice powercolor version that runs at 600mhz on the core clock. 20mhz short of the xt version. I use one myself and I'm usually over 100fps, but I do run it on a core2duo@3ghz. Don't be afraid of ATI.

Yep, until you get up to the 8800 range then there's no reasonably priced nVidia card. ATi all the way. X1950Pro/XT is the card you want.

The 8500GT would barely give you any improvement (if at all) over your current card and the 8600GT would only give you a small boost as well. Certainly not worth the money.

The X1950 on the other hand is faster then the top end 7900GTs which are themselves double the speed of your current card soo....

512mb will not give you a performance improvement in this game because it doesn't use anywhere near that much texture memory, for example.

Go with an 8600GT or 8600GTS.

It might not use the memory space but it does use the memory bandwidth. Both those cards have 128bit memory bandwidth. The 1950 series outperforms them by miles. Get a X1950Pro for less then $200 :)

I went from a 7600Gt 256 to a x1950Pro 512, although I changed everything else as well, BUT, graphic performance is just fabulous in comparison now. I run WW2OL at max settings without any problems, ArmA works great too although maybe not at top settings. Half-Life, for some reason (prolly map size and texture handling) didn't present that much of a differ tho. :)

Non OC:ed Intel e6550 @ 2.33Ghz, 2Gb Corsair 800Mhz mems on a P35 platter along with the x1950Pro, It's a new world for me and I promise that gfxcard has a LOT to do with it, get it, it's probably the best budget buy you can make atm.
