Leopard 10.5 and/or 1.28 Notes <-- read if installing 10.5

43 posts in this topic

As Leopard (OSX 10.5) is arriving on October 26, I thought I would make a few notes as I discover things.

(1) Generally much faster FPS on Intel (I haven't tested Leopard on G5). On my MBP 1.7Gz (Core 1 Duo) generally 20+ in battle towns, 40-60 in the air. Occasionally under very heavy stress it gets down to 13 or so. This is at least 2X what I've gotten under Tiger. YMMV. In general it makes the game much more fun :-0

(2) Sound is a bit messed up, I'm not sure what it is, but certain one-shot sounds start off at random volumes (ie sometimes rifles shots 1KM away sound close to me). It might be a beta thing, not sure; I am not running the golden master (its not available yet). If it's still there under the GM version I will investigate (since that's my code). It's possible that openal changed a bit.

(3) I am working a bit on optimizing memory usage on the Mac version, not sure yet if it will make any additional difference. This sucker uses a LOT of small bits of memory.

(4) Jaeger's famous optimizations are starting to appear in 1.28 beta. The stutter issues should be disappearing. Still a lot of testing to do. This is not a new graphics engine but deep changes to the opengl usage which will help both the old and new engines.

UPDATE: After more playing under Leopard, it appears that the performance is way better up to a point. If the number of folks in the area starts to hit the high vis limit area, the FPS goes down a fair amount. The average FPS is much better by far, but there is still a limit. With 128 I think we can overcome this but for now be warned the FPS improvements may be limited under major battle towns.

UPDATE 2: The grass occasionally jumps up and down. This is irritating but only Martini can fix it.

Geeeessss! Could you test it on a G5 already. If not just send me leopard and I'll test it for you :)

BTW, can't you make a partition to run it separately on?

The installation for a beta requires at least 2 partitions+target and I can't reformat a drive to do it on my G5.

Patience, grasshopper, the cat is only 9 days away.

At least thanks to Ahwulf, we are no longer bound to Apple's buggy OpenAL, it is core audio used, it should be much more easily fixed.

No we still use openal, its the fixes that apple added to the leopard version that I need to adjust our calling to. The problem relates to sounds starting out at the default volume, then switching to the correct volume a few ms later.

Note to all users who are currently running the game under bootcamp: A Leopard Upgrade will not significantly increase your FPS. I recently upgraded and I am getting 1-5 FPS LOWER than what I get under bootcamp. The only plus is that the game runs ALOT cooler in Leopard as opposed to bootcamp.

MBP 2.16 Intel Core Duo

2gb Ram

ATI x1600 256mb

5400 100 gb hd.

Also, I overclock my card to 418:400 in bootcamp.

The biggest improvements seems to be core 2 and core extremes duos under Leopard. Why, I have no clue. My MBP is better outside of battles but in busy areas the same. But why complain about 5 fps less than bootcamp, it used to be 50 ;-)

Please paste in any crash reporter logs or other details so we can figure out what's happening. I haven't gotten any CTDs since 10.5. Also your mac type/ram/video card.

I don't have crash issue but FPS is really messed up in Leopard/G5 combination.

I am currently really mad to Apple since CRS or you keep coding OpenGL and only change is core OS.

It is down to 20 FPS at best, 5-10 fps is actually seen in some areas.

If these idiots are conspiring already tiny PPC gaming, let me buy a PC running Vista since I won't be buying an expensive PC just having an Apple logo on it. I can't really relate this horrible performance problem to anything rather than playing lame games to push G5 owners to Intel.

Bug has been reported to Apple , ID 5623492

My issue has nothing to do with network lag. Apple engineering requested a FPS test on 10.4.11 and as I got a "repair" partition handy, it took 2 mins to test.

Spawned on same mission both 10.5.1 and 10.4.11

10.5.1=6-10 fps

10.4.11=40-50 fps

Funny thing is, as 10.5.1 doesn't have APE yet, the number 1 excuse for Apple and third party developers is gone. Pure OS X,nothing else.

Odd my dual g5 hasn't changed, as I pointed out. What video card do you have? The post on the slow opengl in leopard mentioned nvidia 6600. I have an ATI x800.

Hi

I have just installed 10.5 on my iMac G5 and is about to install wwiiol 1.27.1. I have ran into some trouble that got me reading this thread...

Question:

It seems (from the posts here) that the running the game on 10.5/G5 might be worse than a 10.4/G5 combination. Is that correct?

Will I be better of if I create a second partion running 10.4 for my wwiiol game?

/fablefoo

For My installation error it is still under investigation but I will try re install as Admin, I installed as a user with granted admin rights earlier.

Interesting parts of the installation log:

Hi

Ok, it seems I have to start the game using the same user account (Admin) as I used to install it. It must be some user privilage setting or something that stops me from running the game using other accounts. I just cant figure out what it is, any suggestions anybody?

I will create another partition and compare the behaviour beween 10.4 and 10.5, I hade short freezes yesterday.

I doubt anyone tests that scenario, most people use the default admin account. There isnt anything specific in the game that would stop that from working but then again there isn't any testing so anythings possible. In any case try the beta on 10.5.

Just purchased a iMac yesterday and I have loaded everything that I need to play. I used to play on my old PC but it just wasn't handling very well.

I have a...

2.4 GHz intel Core 2 Duo Processor

4 MB shared L2 Cache

1GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM

320GB Serial ATA hard drive

ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM

When I go to start the program it goes to a black screen a that is it....

I have changed the screen settings and such several different times with no different result. I have the most recent version of Leopard with the MAC OS X recent version.

Any help would be much appreciated. Eager to get back in game.

Do you have the game's display settings the same as the systems display settings? I don't think it matters, but anyway.

I have an 2.8GHz iMac with 3GB memory since August and WWIIOL runs very well on it. In fact, it's a real pleasure. :)

In general do I think you should consider to put in another 2GB-stick. Don't buy the cheapest memory. I recommend a mid-price memorystick of decent quality.

The ram is low but that doesn't cause a black screen. It's usually opengl related. First set your video in OSX preferences to something that fills the whole monitor. Then launch the game and make sure you set in the game preferences (settings button) to exactly match that. Also make sure the settings are Refresh rate = LCD and Color:Millions.

Now launch offline.

Do you only get a black screen under this scenario?
