'Connection to host lost"

10 posts in this topic

Hi i iam kinda a newb i guess, i used to play this game a couple years ago and now have started it back up again. When iam playing online my FPS is fine and its playable so iam guesing its nothing to do with my Mac specs, but i always get booted off with it saying 'connection to server lost'. I have a broadband connection, with a router going to my imac through the wireless airport. Do I need to open certain ports on my router to get a better connection or what. I've heard of people running 56k modem online, so i would have thought my connection would be okay to run this game.

Any ideas?

Some PC folks are in the same boat as you - CRS has said they hope to have it fixed over the weekend.

I talked with Cogent's help desk and got the following response. Cogent is the rats network provider.

We had an outage in Chicago earlier in the evening due to some electrical fires. This caused our ATT peer to drop at that location thus shifting traffic to Dallas

This basically overwhelmed the routers between ATT and the Dallas Cogent and made a lot of people's connections go belly up.

Hopefully its better today...

In network circles this is known as "bad weather".

Hmm, try doing a traceroute to playnet.com when you see the problem . In terminal:

dualie:~] awulf% traceroute playnet.com

traceroute to playnet.com (66.28.224.229), 64 hops max, 40 byte packets

1 * * *

2 68.87.204.57 (68.87.204.57) 13.535 ms 14.849 ms 11.635 ms

3 68.87.207.45 (68.87.207.45) 14.748 ms 10.104 ms 11.608 ms

4 68.87.207.41 (68.87.207.41) 36.298 ms 9.574 ms 9.452 ms

5 68.87.207.29 (68.87.207.29) 9.797 ms 9.492 ms 12.783 ms

6 12.118.225.17 (12.118.225.17) 11.855 ms 16.806 ms 13.454 ms

7 tbr2-p013801.dlstx.ip.att.net (12.123.17.62) 94.762 ms 19.788 ms 13.497 ms

8 ggr1-p380.dlstx.ip.att.net (12.122.12.94) 10.064 ms 31.557 ms 10.220 ms

9 p12-3.core02.dfw01.atlas.cogentco.com (154.54.10.141) 33.484 ms 32.656 ms 31.084 ms

10 g50.ba01.b000385-1.dfw01.atlas.cogentco.com (66.28.5.118) 48.473 ms 35.625 ms 31.525 ms

11 playnet.demarc.cogentco.com (66.28.30.146) 13.884 ms 32.148 ms 11.899 ms

^C

If any of the legs are having trouble there is a problem between you and playnet. The earlier problem was between 8 and 9, I saw a jump to 600 ms which really sucks.

The connection is normally lost when it doesn't get a new packet from the game host for 15 seconds or so. Unless the game host is having trouble (which affects everyone) its usually caused by internet "weather".

Hmm your router configuartion must be blocking the traceroute. You don't need to open any ports as the connection comes from your Mac. There must be something amiss in how things are setup on your end. I also have cable (Comcast) but am connected directly to the cable modem (with apple's firewall on). The network needs of this game are carefully designed to still run on a 56K modem, so you don't need much at all.
