psy, kama; can you uninstall all versions of Playgate listed in Control Panel, go to C:\Program Files\Playnet and delete the "Playgate" folder and then reinstall the Playgate application from here: Playgate Full Install.

If you still cannot connect, can you try the CheckNet application to help us understand why you aren't seeing the server.

I'm having same problem and it's a little late to try all the fixes right now but reading reminded me of something. Did I see a message somewhere relating to comcast subscribers having a problem? I also see that people with McAfee are having a problem. Guess what? Comcast distributes McAfee with their service. Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck so it must be a rhino.

Hello.

Thank you for running Checknets. That shows that your firewall is open to connect to our game server.

We are not sure why so many are still unable to reach our authentication server with the game. We would greatly appreciate more information from you in the form of traceroutes so we can investigate if there are an ISP issues contributing to this problem.

To generate a Traceroute, please follow these steps:

1. Go to Start -> Run

2. type "Command" and press "Enter"

3. type "tracert auth.playnet.com"

This should return:

over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 x ms x ms x ms ###.###.###.###

2 y ms y ms y ms ###.###.###.###

And so on.

Once it reaches our firewall, it will start to look like this:

Don't worry about that.

4. Right-click anywhere in the window and choose Select All.

5. Then Copy.

6. Then Paste into a post here.

FIXED!!

I disabled McAfee and also tried the other changes here to no avail. I redownloaded the playnet app and WWIIOL, and viola!, it worked. Don't know what that would have done exactly, but it's working now for me.

Ok this is a start.. I went into task manager and shut down all mcafee programs and was able to pull the log in screen up and log in for the first time since that patch...

Same Mcafee I had before it.. lol

Could it be the old Cogentco dispute? They reached an agreement yesterday Press Release

I couldn't copy and paste the trace but it timed-out just after playnet.demarc.cogentco.com (same as the rest of you)

Btw, I don't use McAfee and tried with Avast disabled and re-installed the Playnet full install as requested by Bloo

I'm stuck playing GTAIV and by no means is it a good substitute :)

I don't think so Svedala. If the sprint-cogent dispute was the problem, we would have seen it much earlier.

Your traceroute isn't timing out at playnet.demarc.cogentco.com. It's hitting our firewall. :)

Hey,

Same here, after login in and lunching the game, it starts to update for 10 sec then it crash and get to the the classical error message, unable to connect. I did reinstall playgate as advised and teh other tricks in the property shortcut, but everything has failed.

Fact is I didn't update since 1.26 (just resub..) so I'm wondering if I must simply go for a full reinstall..or I dunno..!

I also did the traceroute trick.

That's what worked for me. I reinstalled Playgate, but it didn't work, so I reinstalled the entire game. It then worked.

Well, I finally uninstall the game and playgate, reinstall full game and playgate again... And seems its working for now! I just played 1 hour and the game only crashed before I was leaving when I despawned.. Weird..?!

Anyway, looks like I'm good to go for now.

Just purchased a great computer XPS730 from Dell which has vista as the OS. Loaded game, played ok for sometime with occassional CTD or CTHL but since the major update release, had major issues trying to connect to authentication server. I would click my shortcut over and over and once in a great while it would let me in for about 1 hour of game play before a CTHL. I lowered my ingame playability to mid level (i.e. good visual and playability rather than just good visual). But just read a post that mentioned Mcafee was causing issues. I went ahead and deleted my Mcafee from my system and immediately had no issues connecting to the authentication server and I don't have anymore CTHL. I am not recommending deleting your antivirus program, and in the past I used to never have one (I don't go to strange sites or open weird emails, always have my windows and microsoft updates current and firewall turned on and never have a problem). My firewall is on and I added all the ports, both TCP and UDP. So I am very happy now and I will try to bring my game back up to high visual and see if it still stable. Getting about 100 FPS in game when it is set to the middle and about 65 FPS when high visual.

I had the same issue, but mine was resolved by removing Mcaffee from my computer which is running vista on an XPS730 from Dell.

I've flushed DNS, checked the shortcut, tried primary & secondary connections...and the rest of the tips in this thread...short of reinstalling.

Doing a full re-install (overlay) did the trick.

I was using Wireshark to look at what happens when I ping'd auth.playnet - on those pings it would drop ICMPs...I imagine it's set that way to refuse blind connections...making it difficult to troubleshoot imo.

How did the full reinstall change this?

*I still can't ping auth.playnet...but I can play...hmm
