Note found on a dead German in a building in Roye

They asked for volunteers. We were to throw ourselves into the city. Stall the french and the brits that were there. I have been here for near an hour. We started with near 35 men. I am the last left as far as I can tell. No one answers the radio when I try to find out whats going on. Just a few minutes ago I stumbled in the dark to find a French officer talking with a recruit. I took bead on the recruit and dropped him. The officer ducked behind a near by building when I was reloading my KAR. I crept forward. I heard the officer say something in French. I rushed him, all I saw was a grenade fly by my head as I pulled the trigger on my rifle. I barely had time to see the spray of blood as I rushed past the falling French officer as I heard the explosion of the grenade behind me. I managed to avoid any damage. How am I the last one alive? I seem to be the luckiest person in this war. I will look forward to getting back home and drinking some beer. Thought I heard something downstairs.......
