FPS Troubles - report here

53 posts in this topic

I haven't had any fps problems like those mentioned in this thread. I have a 2.4GHz iMac with 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD2600/256MB VRAM. I cmd-tabbed to the activity viewer and saw that offline WW2Online uses about 1.2 GB real RAM and about 1.7 GB virtual memory with about 7GB of virtual memory total. I also noticed that WW2Online keeps the Flash Player.plugin and Quicktime framework loaded when the game is running. I sampled the process and saw that Flash_EnforceLocalSecurity was being called in about 4 of the 11 threads. I assumed at first that Flash/Quicktime were left over from the startup/web interface and not released when the game is started but Flash appears to be used during the game.

I just looked at the console log and found that since the .2 update, there are a number of WW2Online network debugging entries in it. These weren't there prior to the update.

Hmm, never looked at the web threads, RickB wrote this code so I never investigated wether the UI was being properly released. I will check on this.

Don't know if this observation helps at all, but in addition to what I and others have reported about the massive swings in FPS in-game, I also am getting lags in the brigade window. When I first log-in (after restarting my iMac) I can click through brigades, theatre map, and spawn lists quickly and with no visible lag. BUT, after my first sortie, when I return to the brigade window, it slows down to a crawl. It even freezes for a few seconds at a time. The map window gets the white squares, and there is always a pause between mouse clicks and action. It's like I am getting 2 FPS!

Hmm interesting, i get these as well but assumed I was hitting virtual memory (I only have 2.5GB). Can you cmd-tab out and look with Activity Viewer what your yellow and green ram amounts are?

Related to this I notice that after I go to the settings tab it takes a few seconds if not more to be able to return to the main menu. I'll chk the memory usage when in game.

just to add to the oddities report.

On my MBP Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33GhZ, 3GB DDR2 RAM, ATI RADEONX1600 vcard with 256MB vram on OS X 10.4.11 the dam game runs smoothly. I don't get the constant stutters (those fluctuations we were talking about where just looking in the 'wrong' direction will cause a huge drop in fps to single digits). Here fps are 50-100+ most of the time.

Now on iMac, 2.66GhZ Intel Core2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M vcard with 256MB vram on OS X 10.5.7 game runs like crap as explained numerous times. Since the same machine can run it on W7 under bootcamp I am starting to suspect there is something 'wrong' with the way the OS deals with the NVIDIA video card. I wish we could test this somehow.

Sorry to barge in your MAC thread, but I am getting exact same thing on PC. Only when running 2 accounts at the same time and usually its only one account that gets it. Doesnt happen straight after first sortie but its almost certain to hit me after few sorties. Funnily enough my overlay fps counter (ati tray tools) shows steady 2 FPS when at the semi frozen UI.

I have the same problems as everyone else. My FPS goes from 50 to 5 and then back gain every few seconds. I have a 2.66 GHz Intel Core Duo with 4 GB DDR3 RAM' date=' a 12 meg DSL connection and am running Mac OS X 10.5.7. My video card is a NVIDIA GeForce 9400 with 256MB of VRAM.[/quote']

sounds like a pretty baseline mac... Who skunk checks the coding for the game? by chance? Its pretty odd older macs are getting better FpS than newer macs what's the point of getting a brand new mac if the FpS are gonna be terrible from redundant coding? and improper use of CPU and VM does this mean more cthl and lag for all?

2 gigs of vm not enough? wow...

Older macs don't get better fps in general.

However there is a lot of variation between different video cards and hardware and drivers/OS, and some percentage of people will see strange behavior. It's worse in the PC version. Believe me if it was easy to fix the ancient code in this game it would be done; 1.31 changes the engine underneath for the first time, and it will take time to determine how it affects everyone's Mac. What you see today are decisions made nearly 10 years ago based on the hardware of the day, and it doesn't translate well to today. Thus the updated engine in 1.31.

http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=88 all of those video cards have different features X different drivers; the fact that the game works on the majority is more than a miracle.

For whatever reason, NVidia cards seems to give the game more trouble. I had to turn off normal maps to get my GT120 to show walls.

dual 1.8ghz powerpc g5

4gb ddr sdram

ati radeon x800 xt

sometimes barely 20 fps while flying at 3k, unplayable over large town aos

usually it holds on 25/46 max fps

had to turn off minimap flying escort 7k behind frontline (so no action) because i was getting 3 fps

i'd think that i would get better result with this spec?

Same spec as my old G5, yea its terrible. Also note that that video card is not likely to work with 1.31. According to GOPHURS note on the font page, the requirement is for a shader 3.0 video card (I thought it was 2.0) and the X800s aren't 3.0 (just 2.0). I asked for clarification from him, but I'm on the road and haven't figured out how to read my playnet email yet...

Ahwulf: Can we get a general update on where CRS is on fixing this post 1.3 FPS bug? When the upgrade hit, there was a storm of complaints that the game had become unplayable with many of us going from a previous low of 20 FPS to 5 or less. You and others said "Don't unsubscribe, we're going to fix it."

So I dutifully posted my specs for the third or fourth time, kept paying CRS my monthly bill, and....a month later there is no change. I've hung on, but can't fly or fight anywhere near a town or a large battle. Even zooming in on an FB stops me in my tracks. Not to mention I can't mark maps, and the brigade screen is now freezing too.

Can I assume that you and the rest of the rats are largely focused on 1.5 and nothing will change until that rolls out? If that's the case, I'm going to take a break for awhile. The game is broken.

I have a imac 2.66 intel core 2 Duo 24"

4GB Ram 1067mhz DDR3 SDRam

Nvidia GForce 9400m 256vram

I have to run it at 1024 x 768 on the default BEST performance settings to fight on the ground in small towns. I just up the vis limit to medium and enable the flash filter so I can see gun shots... In town, 15-30 fps with dips to 4 fps. Small towns only - IF there are small towns with the old 2D ruins in them.. forget it, 4FPS.

Fought in Arras last night for a few runs into town... every time I looked at the AB... 3 FPS, if I deployed my MG I got 3-5 fps unless I looked at the VEH entrance then the FPS shot up to 20-25 fps... IF I looked at the old 2D building ruins... 3fps... and yes all my shaders where OFF.

NOW, I get some better performance out of my 2.66 dual core intel tower.

I have a Nvidia 7300GT/256 vram and with 4 Gigs 667mhz DDR2 ram

Note: I also run the game at max vis and 1280x1024, with flash enabled etc...

I still get stutters to 5 fps but I can play in large towns at 25 fps on average. unless Im getting hit with smoke rounds from mortars... then im down to 5-8 fps.... basically just a slight FPS hit with this patch I would say about a 10-15 fps hit (pre patch it was 35-40fps on average in town) on this computer...

THE "faster" IMAC... its monsterous hit on FPS. I basically fly only now when on the IMAC...

Those of you having trouble with the game freezing and the lagging bad when an alert message comes up, just turn of your alert thing in the settings. The same thing was happening on my moms computer and after that, no problems.

I'm visiting my mom so I'm not at my regular computer.

My nephew has a brand new macbookpro, and get really good fps, but every once ina while it drops to 5fps for no reason. Then he respawns and its back to 30-40 again. My POS ancient MBP gets the same crappy 8-12 its always gets. Must be something related to the higher performing macs. Note most people aren't seeing this on every mac. So it's quite random and puzzling. My job when I get back next week is too look into problems of this nature (even getting paid for it!).

Note that 1.31 is very different and likely to affect macs completely differently than 1.30. But I am going to look at both versions (still a lot of common code but the engine has many changes in it). But I can't do anything until I get back from talking care of my mom here. I will be back on Monday next week.

You can try the PC version if you like, it might work better/worser but likely different. Or wait. Either way 1.31 is a whole new ballgame performance wise. I haven't gotten a beta yet so I can't say what its like.

I don't have source code here so I can't debug here.

The alert causing fps issues is cross platform, though I haven't gotten it at home. It also only happens randomly to some people.

Ahwulf this was happening on my PC as well. Switched to Windows 7 64bit and its GONE. Looks to me it was the Win XP 32bit ATI driver that might have been causing it.

For whatever reason its definitely a cross platform issue. It could be driver related. If its related to opengl functionality it may change dramatically with 1.31. Once 1.31's beta is working sufficiently we can see if it solves some of these issues.

At least on the PC the drivers are updated by the manufacturers, on OSX its generally Apple, which doesn't update them as often.

A few things...

My Intel 2x2.66 dual core Tower (667 MHz DDRs) Is running 10.4.11

with Nvidia 7300.

My Imac is 10.5 Leopard... its a 2x2.66 MHz (with 1067MHz SDDR) with

the Nvidia 9400M

I am wondering if its a Leopard thing?

Secondly... My FPS drop most definately deal with looking at an AB.. FPS his is not so bad if I spawn in at the AB, but if I leave the AB after a certain distance and turn to look at it (LOD issue?)... NOW im down to 4-5 FPS, and if I now enter it im down to 3-4 FPS.

Thirdly - the old 2D buildings, the ruined state give me fits too.

It possible there is a building with bad geometry, that's happened before. Many of them are replaced in 1.31. If its a driver issue, the drivers in 10.4 and 10.5 are different. Of course since this happens in various windows versions as well anything is possible. Have you tried playing on the same hardware under bootcamp?

Bad geometry in a building may be part of the problem, but my FPS also drops down to 2-5 when I am in the middle of nowhere and suddenly change my view, like glancing over my shoulder or switching from tank driver to commander. It will drop down to nothing for a second or two, then come back up to 10-30 FPS.

That maybe be loading geometry or loading stuff onto your visible list. I see that all the time. The vis list is a lot of the problem with all fps issues.

FPS has gone to hell on the iMac.

I'm glad that I can still play the game on the PC and will do so until the Mac software has been fixed.

Just shooting a Bofors at a FB in full magnification view yields about 5 - 7 fps. Impossible to even track a moving target correctly. It's like watching a "Charlie Chan" stop frame movie. At No magnification the view yields about 12 - 19 fps but is still a bit "jerky" when moving the gun.

It's gone from Bad to Crap.....

My .02 worth.

Jeep I've forgotten what Mac/video you have.

I'm actually working on the memory problems on the PC version but collecting memory usage stats on the Mac version. The end result might help both platforms slim down.

I have been playing for 6+ years but I have always played 1-10 FPS. I have never stayed one side in a campaign because I can't play offense without being 0-1 FPS.

Please help me out I have tried everything!

My computer is:

A Macbook Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz

Memory: 2GB

L2 Cache: 4MB

Graphics: Intel GMA 950

VRAM: 64 MB shared system

I play on OSX as well.

About 2 years ago I had about a month of game play on partition where I averaged 125-250 FPS but it kept crashing and then my boot camp was destroyed and I keep getting fatal error every time I try to make a new boot camp so that's out of the question.

Please help me
