Update:

Made sure the executables are set to run as admin. TeamSpeak and the Launcher run just fine.

Tried running in offline mode and got the same error which I guess means it's not a network/firewall issue. It's a brand new machine but I tried checking for updated video and audio drivers with no luck.

Also tried disconnecting all peripherals (USB headphones and razer mouse) with no luck.

I'll try dxdiag and maybe a full uninstall/reinstall tonight.

This is from the tech support page

Nvidia cards: ww2.exe stops working error

Jul 15 02:25PM

Some Nvidia card players are getting an error that WW2.exe has stopped working when they try to load the game. This appears to be a problem with how Nvidia drivers get installed. The new drivers aren't overwriting a certain driver file correctly, leaving a default Microsoft version of the file, which then conflicts with the new drivers.

The fix that worked for me was to manually install the latest drivers. This is not as complex at it might sound. Salsatech has easy step-by-step instructions with pictures. It only takes a minute or two.

Please try that if you encounter this error.

Doesn't seem to be DEP.

I've re-downloaded and reinstalled 4 or 5 times now.

Checknet v5 gives:

=== Test Started @ Sat Jul 18 19:31:10 2009

UTC ===

Test 1: Auth Pri -OK- 59ms

Test 2: Main Pri -OK- 48ms

Test 3: Main Alt -OK- 50ms

Test 5: Main PingAlt WSAE:: Connection refused (10061)*** FAILED: Connect failed

Test 6: Main Chat WSAE:: Connection refused (10061)*** FAILED: Connect failed

Test 7: Event Pri -OK- 46ms

Test 8: Event Alt -OK- 51ms

*** Partial failure.

- Check firewall

Tests 4, 5 and 6 fail whether the firewall is on or off.

Firewall is Norton 360 firewall. Tried adding the game to the program control and tried running the game with the firewall disabled altogether, still no luck.

Don't bother using Checknet until a new version is released. The one we have now doesn't work with v1.30 or later.

The current Checknet is not working with 1.30.

I just noticed some associated errors that I hadn't seen before:

Event ID: 9010

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (ww2.exe)

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (Battleground Europe Launcher)

Event ID: 9013

The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application

Not sure how or if this relates to my startup problem but thought I'd pass it along.

I'm still having this same problem. I've been following threads of other people experiencing this error and so far I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling a variety of different drivers. Currently I'm using the 186.91 Forceware drivers. I used Driver Sweeper before installing and it made no difference.

One thing that people have suggested is uninstalling the game and then removing all registry entries related to the game. I'm leary of deleting a couple of keys in:

HKey_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/DirectInput/MostRecentApplication/

ID REG_SZ WW2_SSE2.EXE4A96B94300B9CC00

Name REG_SZ WW2_SSE2.EXE

Is it safe to remove those?

ETA: NM I started Spore and all the values updated.

I deleted the extra info for you.

The only thing I notice from your specs is that you haven't installed Vista Service Pack 2. Installing the service pack might not help with starting WWIIOL, but I would advise that you install it anyway.

Yeah I actually noticed that right after I posted the dxdiag stuff. I went ahead and installed it. No difference in WWIIOL unfortunately.

I've messing around with drivers from Guru3d and Laptopvideo2go without much luck. Just for yucks I tried starting the game offline while I only had the Windows VGA driver installed. Game stopped with the same error. I recorded the ww2 log file:

C:\Program Files\Battleground Europe\WW2_sse2.exe

File version: 1, 30, 3, 255

Program compile time: Aug 27 2009 11:32:36

Date and time: 9/27/2009 16:08:36

EAX: 0x02e70000, EBX: 0x000000d2, ECX: 0x02ef7958, EDX: 0xffffe5c8

It looks pretty similar to past errors. Some of the latest drivers don't seem to support mobile cards although the forums mention adjusting an inf file to make it work. Does anybody know how safe that is, or even how to do it? I looked at the inf file but I'm not quite sure what to change to make it work.

have you tried this yet.

right click on the shortcut go to properties click compatibility

Then put a check in the following

Disable visual themes

Disable Desktop composition

Disable Display scaling on high DPI settings.

Put a check mark in Run this program as an administrator

see if that helps after you reload your video drivers.

No difference but thank you for the suggestion.

No problem.

Have you checked all of your drivers to make sure they are up todate including the chipset drivers?

hmm,ok, try this one. Flip the sound off then switch it from software to hardware and back. I had a problem a while back that proved to be the sound card.

If that doesnt work remove the game completely if you are fine using regedit once you complete remove it go into the registry and wipe out all things marked ww2, playgate, and battleground europe.

Then reload it see if that works.

if that dont work send it to me and ill whack it with a hammer lol.

Should work i cant see why it wouldn't...

Unless it is another program getting in the way. i have seen on here a few times in the past where another game or program stuffs this one up once that game/program is yanked this one suddenly works.
