Smartheap errors and the like

132 posts in this topic

No, the mission results pending error is unrelated. If you don't see OOM dialog, its something else. 1.31 is soooo radically different that once we have it stable I can see how it reacts differently. I hope to be in rat office next week (this week I am taking care of my mom who has lung/brain cancer) and focus on the PC version issues especially this error. All I have with me is an ancient macbookpro.

So what you all are saying hear, is that you realy cant play WWiionline on Windows 7 64bit???

I am starting to get thoughtfull here. I never could guess that buying me a new computer, going from a laptop to a desktop with new stuff in it, to improve my game A LOT, would make everything more complicated...

I just upgraded my computer, cause i have played on a lap-top :

intel core 2 duo prossesor

Geforce 8600m video card

And a tiny 15" screen..

With Vista 32 bit if i`m not to wrong..

Game runs okey.

Of course i have some ctd`s, and very low FPS the places where much happens at ones, and all that ****..

So i now upgraded to an

Intel i5 quad core 2.66 GHz

Geforce GTX 260 videocard

24" screen, so i can see what i shoot at :)

And on top the new Windows 7 64 bit is coming along with it, pre-installed..

I most honestly say that i havent read every post here, but i see much trouble with this Windows 7 64 bit..

So what many says here, is that i now, with some real hardware to play the game on,

with less laging, and higher FPS and a Much bigger screen.

So will i now ctd, and have alot og trouble due to that windows 7 64 bit???

What do i have to do, so i can play this on my new coputer with windows 7 64 bit that i will get next week???

Is there stuff i can do. or do i have to wait for 1.31 to play proparly again??

Heard some buddys say this game(version) has been going for a lot of years, so its starting to get old, compared to the new operativ-systems coming out.

But isnt that something the guys running the whole thing here (rats) to make the adjustments, so we can play, even with upgraded computers..

I am not a computer noob, and dont have a clue on much of this things.. So some advises would been great :)

Thx for a good game, i am enjoying, and i hope i can enjoy it as much or more when i get my new stuff soon..

:salute: Viking

1.31 should be OK, but I think 1.30 is not supported. THere is a mouse/joystick issue which may keep you from playing it (directinput support is too old). This has already been fixed in the 1.31 closed betas. Martini and Ramp are now using W7 for development so it won't be an issue with 1.31. Otherwise your rig should be very nice :-)

Wolf, when will verson 1.31 be out?

Ive been told mym cpu crap is so bad i should think abaot a whole new cpu

so im getting a

HP Pavilion Elite e9200z series

for chrismas...

So i need to know when 1.31 is out cause:

Ive been told this cpu wont support 1.31

7 doesent support 1.30....

So i need to get 7 right on time.

THere are no official specs yet for 1.31, but that seems pretty modern. I assume Nvidia 210 or something like that? The only odd thing is that I think they use AMD, which sometimes is a little flaky, but with W7 it's probably not a big issue.

Some people are actually running on w7 apparently but its a crapshoot as to what happens to you.

Once open beta starts we should have specs, I would say a couple weeks at most but its just a guess. Still a lot to do. For sure before xmas.

I know time and resources are scarce but it still will be a pretty big disappointment if 1.31 doesnt go live (as in live on the game server) for the 10AO christmas period.

I have a new version of smartheap and will be working with it soon. Hopefully it either fixes this OOM error or at least gives me a shot to trap it (the current debug version of smartheap doesn't work so it isn't much help). It will be fixed for 1.31 for sure.

Hmm,We'll is it requeared to use smartheap?

Youd think you cna just totaly remove the system form the cleint and find a substitute.

Smartheap manages memory usage for the client, without it your fps and stuttering would be much worse. However the version of Smartheap is a little old, in 1.31 we will be using a much newer version. Sadly non of the alternatives are any better.

I wrote a competitor to Smartheap on the Mac back in the 90's so I know how these things operate.

Hmm,So what your saying is smart heap is gliched basicaly and is underestimating out memery?Because sometimes i can bypass it into the game but sometimes i can't.

No it's a very complex problem, and is not Smartheap's fault, the real problem is in the client code itself. You only see the end result of the problem (the dialog) which makes it look like its a Smartheap problem.

Once you see the dialog, you should quit; continuing is a guarantee that it will crash soon. In 1.31 (where hopefully we have fixed the client problems) if by chance (and it should be rare) you get a dialog, it will only allow you to quit.

The new smartheap hopefully will make it easier for me to discover what in the client is wrong; that's been the hard thing in the past.

We'll overwise i get the error like the first time i load into the actural world...

So your basicaly saying ima have to suffer imtill my new cpu or 1.31?

So your basicaly sayoing my membership i just bought will go to waste?

I demand a refund,in that cause.

I have no control over that, I just work on code.

Unless a miracle happens and the problem can be found in code that is the same in 1.31 and 1.30; however the code has massively change in the meantime so it might not even happen anymore in 1.31.

As I've said in this thread before, there are 2 OOM problems, one happens over time (a real memory leak) and one happens to "some" people at random points. Most people never see the second error, which is the one I've never been able to reproduce on any PC. Random errors are extremely hard to find, and the Smartheap feature that would help a lot in finding the error never worked before the version that we just got. Assuming the new one works better, maybe it will point out where the random error is. Then we can decide if its possible to fix it in 1.30. In any case 1.31 should no longer have this problem.

I can fly about one medium length sortie, after which it starts to get risky as the game is using 3GB+ of RAM and WILL crash everytime after it gets above that.

I've lost alot of kills due to this bug. In my last RAF mission i shot down 2+ enemies and then was just coming into the AF to RTB and the game crashed, the mission never showed up in my stats.

Given that people are paying to play what is essentially a broken game, it's very disappointing to see that this issue has been around for several years with no fix, last time I played (about a year ago) the problem wasn't this bad.

Why doesn't CRS bring in a specialist to hunt it down or place the highest priority on this bug?

Is there anythign I can do with regards to my system settings to reduce the frequency of this crash?

I am using Windows 7, running the .exe's in vista comaptibility mode

4GB RAM

Intel Q6600 quad core

I am the specialist. The previous version of smartheap (a product we pay for) did not have a debug version that worked with this client. The new version (which we just got) does. Without a functioning debug version I can't trap the random error and figure out where it is.

In any case although it works for many people, Win7 isn't actually officially supported until 1.31.

*Most* people don't get this bug, but for those who do, it can happen often. The nature of random bugs is they are always hard to catch. I have *never* been able to get this bug (the random variation) to happen. I can only get the memory leak version to happen, and its very hard to get.

Anything you do to change your system like install new drivers, or a new OS, or something that changes the environment, can often change the frequency of the random bug. Some people install a new driver and it goes away. Other people install the same driver and get it more often.

The only one i get is the memory leak,

Whenever it goes like:

SmartHeap Library

There is not enoupgh memory to continue this game,(Something among that line)

Please clear some memory and hit retry...

I cleared my disc and deleted lots of ****...

No good.

Its ovisualy the bug.

I got the newest vision of Nvida driver for my Nvida,

It decreased the amount of times i get it,

But i still get it alot...

It happens EVERY time i attemp to play,

But now i can play longer without the error,

So its Survivable intill i get my 7 at xmass.

Yea it's happening to me roughly every 20-30 mintues of in game time, and it's obviously a memory leak, not random at all.

Two fo my friends are both using win 7 and have no crashing issues at all, so there must be something I can do to resolve it, just need to figure out what.

I realize bugs like these are tough to track down (I am a programmer myself), it's just frustrating that a paid game like this that's been around forever would still have these problems. If it was a free game I could understand it.

What would you recommend in terms of drivers to play with, chipset? It doesn't seem like a video driver problem.

You can't easily tell which variant you are getting, the random one can happen anytime, the other seems to happen over time. What happens with the random one is that something somewhere requests a random amount of memory (instead of asking for exactly what it needs); if the amount pushes the games over the 2GB virtual memory limit per application in Windows, then OOM, if not then you never notice it. It could be asking for 500MB even though it only needs 50 bytes.

The leak one is very hard to get; generally if you see OOM dialog you hit the random one.

On the Mac version you either never get the random error or you never hit the 4GB limit under OSX. Windows is peculiar in only supported 2GB; I think in a 64bit windows app the limit isn't there.

Remember the limit is virtual memory not disk space or the amount of RAM in your PC. Also, you can only see the correct amount of VM in use for your application in Microsoft's Process Explorer. Task Manager lies and should not be depended on.

CHanging the driver doesn't *fix* the bug, it just rearranges memory and the random value becomes something different; the hope is that the new value is smaller.

I dobt this is possible,But you might want to invest in a "Electronic net" of something that moniters all the codes while you play,And can tell when it jumps into the error,So you can Cacth which part of the cleing is doing it...

P.S if you cant cacth it i'd be more then happy to mail my CPU To CRS for testing :)

(Aslong as it doesent come back destroyed..and if it does i want a new cpu teh heh)
