Biggest waste of spending in war

39 posts in this topic

True - and valid point.

It has recently been suggested that 3 - 6 months delay was put on German production after the RAF Bomber Commands Ruhr campaign, whilst actually being one of the only things that forced Speer too loose his cool, which I think says how effective it actually was.

Note the strategy was the issue, as Harris moved the target to Berlin.

I wouldn't disagree that the politics made some action essential, even if the focus was skewed. I think it's just a terrible shame to look back (with the luxury of hindsight, knowing the war was won) now and see the strategy of town bombing was a poor one and that the directions to move towards oil targets were there but not applied firmly enough or ignored by commanders scoring with impunity

And this is the rub - decisions are made before the full effectiveness and outcomes are made.

Planning for the bomber campaign actually began well before WWII and evolved several times - first if all it was industrial, and then it became towns becuase you could hit towns.

And all trhough that period of time the development and investment in bomber design and building in factories, not to mention the ordanance. It isn't a simple thing to switch off and change direction with so hindsight is indeed a wonderful thing.

The right target WAS selected- then deselected.

Reading through that USSBS thing, it was even worse. Just 3 plants, keeping three highly explodey plants offline, would have taken ALL high octane gasoline synthetic or otherwise away from the Luftwaffe.

Imagine a bombing campaign where the German interceptors are performing 20 knots plus slower....

Soviets are land hungry monsters.

The bolsheviks were eager to sign that so they could try and snatch Finnland and the other eastern countrys.

The "armpit of the east" would have attacked america or germany, they just were going to wait and see who won, and try and muscle them out. Better that Mr.Moustache invaded instead of letting them go for the allied countrys.

Still the communists put scars on europe that will never heal.

Apparently, if you read Tooze's "Wages of Destruction" the German army has too much ammunition manufactured prior to the Battle of France. They expected it to be a slog, hence the requiremen for shells as per the reliance on Artillery as per the first world war. This undermines the concept of a new pre-manufactured Blitzkrieg strategy....

Im not saying it was a big waste of spending but it certainly tied up Germany's scarce resources for a period of time as a great deal of copper, for example was tied up in shells.

biggest waste of money was supporting the russians. we should of let them beat each other until both had nothing left then england might have been able to beat germany with just us aid.

Bad move.

The one thing the West didn't need was a Stalin who concluded we were going to play just that kind of game, and he makes a separate peace deal.
