I remember

33 posts in this topic

1. 1st day of release, the madhouse that followed with forums and servers crashing all around us.

2. When aircraft had a pilot modelled that included fatigue .... fly too many high G maneuvers and your pilot would get tired and be unable to maneuver quite so nimbly.

3. REAL night

4. When damaged in flight, you could no longer bring up your map. You had to navigate back to your airfield by following terrain features, like the big valley near Bertrix.

5. When to get to a fight you had to ride in a truck .... no 'instaplay' meant actually talking to your teammates and squaddies

6. When the Breakfast Club drove the allies INSANE!

7. BIG, BIG battles ..... 30 Panzers driving over a hill to lay waste to some town, and being met by 40 Allied tanks.

The last couple of days, I thought I'd give Battleground Europe another try. Both times the place was a wasteland, with no action going on at all.

So, you other old-timers out there...... what do YOU remember?

Hey Stessco,

What time are you logging in around (your time zone as well)? If it's really late US time it's typically slower, but there are definitely battles going on.

In our next game update (1.34.11) we'll be introducing the Active Battles Tab to the game and it'll be much easier for everyone to find action.

I remember closed beta 0.61 or so :)

I remember how patiently we were helping devs testing cargo ships... players waiting in line driving their vehicles on command to be loaded on board.

I remember WW2OL had "active players" counter on the webpage and it shown 8000+ players online...

I remember riding the truck for 20 minutes with dozen of squamates, swimming across the river in a futile attempt to capture enemy city.

I remember what WW2O was the first flight simulator for me where you were able to disengage by making enemy lost visibility on you.

I remember stopping my subscription several times then re-opening it.

I'm timezone 3, and believe me, things are DEAD during Australian evenings. As for active battles, the best of luck with that, but as I mainly fly, its pretty easy to tell whether there are ANY enemy aircraft on the map, and unfortunately, there rarely are.

Other remembered things:

1. The update that killed players hard drives, requiring a complete reformat and reinstallation from scratch.

2. The beta version where you could load 88s onto cargo ships and deploy/fire them ..... I remember begging CRS to leave it in so that players could roll in Q ships, but alas.....

3. The video of the African scenery, which was due to be released "soon". I think that was some time in 2003 or so :)

4. Planes which flew faster when upside down

What else do you remember?

Hearing ya man. Last night there were 3-4 FRUs setup and they were making jokes on chat that there nobody online to actually use them. Were there any battles last night in Aussie TZ? I went to bed as I couldn't find anything.

Best Game Never Played.

Seriously, and that other WW2 game (you know, the one you can ride a bike in) can't hold a candle to this game.

I would just like the ability to turn off only enemy icons when flying. WB had that feature and I always used it. Made the game more exciting by having to identify what I was fighting against once I got close enough to see what it actually was. Second option would be to turn off the plane identifier and just have the halo.

Bunker camping , no sappers

Able to climb certain trees in game.

ability to blow an fb with bombers

armor colums 30-40 long , and overstocking frontline bde's

I could think of more, including the infamous no bush trees bug.

Loved climbing trees, would love to see that come back and be able to get on more roofs.

Would love to see the FRU go away go back to the MSP, you would have to increase the bushes back to the way they used to be.

And if someone in daring enough, the MSP could be parked inside a building in the town/city you are attacking. With limitations to how close

to a CP you are.

Want to see more furniture in buildings too and more buildings you can enter.

If you can destroy it, you should be able to heal it. Only from the outside.

The worst thing in the game I find is walls and other structures are NOT totally SOLID. To many ways you can get your gun thru a wall or veh (armour).

:D

I remember when logged first time around feb/march 2004 that (my first mmo game) that there is insane amount fighting going on. Felt like everyplace had people fight in every hour I logged.

Also when I saw my first plane in air with red circle named Hurri I though it was some finnish player mocking swedes. (Hurri is midly rude word in finnish language for swedes).

first year player, but I did not get game till feb 11.

By then most bugs were worked out, and more equipment was ingame.

I just remember being overwhelmed by the learning curve.

By the end of my first day I figured a squad would be my best bet

and I joined SG. 8 years we raised hell before squads lost most

of their attack options and SG stopped supporting this game.

To bad, we had some epic battles vs other squads and of course

repeatedly simucapping Brussels as both axis and allied.

I remember night so dark you could not see 100y, cornflake skies,

putting a sachel on a friendly inf and have him rush in a bunker and

even if he died the explosion would still kill ei, several tries on different bunker

designs, several times trying to make spawns so ei could not get in,

long ass truck rides to get to battle then hitting an invisable tree and 20 guys

dieing, driving armour from 3 towns back to over supply a front line town,

then losing all of them in 20 mins of combat, no supply limit so you could kill

156 ei in 1 spawn camp.

No game has come close to the love/hate relationship this one has, and so glad

it is once again moving forward.

TY to all who have been working so hard this last little while!!

I remember WW2OL had "active players" counter on the webpage and it shown 8000+ players online....

so many players you had to have only the closest 128 actually render or your

lag went to heck and your comp exploded in protest.

1: Climbing trees and ladders (fire escapes where all over big cities)

2: Allied tanks that were not shell proof (if eveyone who plays complains about allied tanks invincibility you should fix it)

3: Ditches next to ever road so if the driver of the opel, after a 20 min ride, had a little lag everyone died in a roll over into a ditch.

4: 109 was not a swaying, engine shacking, out of control ride.

5: If you owned the town you could spawn there to defend it not wait for high command to react 30 mins to late.

6: Dinant and Anhee 20 day battles.

7: Blitz tactics could be used. Game moves to slow for HC to keep up.

8: Air raid siren

9: Only 5 generals each side. Rank used to mean something.

10: Bombing raids with every gun manned.

When I see this kind of topics I feel sad thinking that the best times of this game already passed. I wish I had found this game 10 years ago.

Dinant and Anhee. OMG the memories of that mess.

I remember when enemies could hop in your truck. A buddy of mine would meet my Opel somewhere as a French soldier and we'd go cap as many towns until we couldn't keep our eyes open. All coordinated through AIM alt-tabbing out. hahaha

Driving for an hour waaaaaaay behind the line just to cap Bertrix. Don't know why, but Bertrix was always an obsession.

Which reminds me of spending way too much time on that airfield trying to get on the wing of a Hawk 75 to do some jerry-rigged paradropping before that was a real thing. I think the wing-riding was a myth, though. I never got it to work.

I don't know if anyone is still around that got into the Sims Online when that went beta. But a bunch of us from the OT crew played a LOT of Sims Online in beta. That was hilarious.

I remember the battle in the trees, iron trees, and 10,000 foot plateaus. I have been gone for awhile and giving it another go before reactivating my old account.

I remember all those too :) #4 used to drive me nuts.

I remember the big cliff fortress that was in Dinant, you could walk around inside it.

I remember logging into closed beta for the first time, meeting up with some guy and both saying "this can't be all there is...".

I remember Friday updates, the pre-release video that showed panzers hiding inside a barn on farm (surrounded by fences) and was being strafed by a spit... the beta looked nothing like it

I remember Mo getting pissy that Dragons desk was bigger than his.

The first MMO and "realistic" flight simulator to me.

The german smg firing backwards.

The raids with 10-20 stukas + about same ammount of 109s (took em from AFs which were more far away to save supply), 30+ armored vechiles (brought from cities more far from the front line) 20-40 boots + several nicely placed 88s to cut the supply. Preparing attack to one town, 2-4 hours before actuall attack. All these players being native finnish speakers on same TS.. damn, we gave them hell.. 2-4 towns/squad night..

Also I remember factory bomb runs, escorts etc. when there is like 10+ bombers and 3-6 fighters flying to the England. Furrballs, when you had 10+ ea between 0 to 3k etc..

Also those Bunker guard duties, where you had task to guard bunker whole time as a rifleman, for not following orders in the air... yes, game 10 years ago was something.

- Multi squad AO setups, with a full mix of AAA, ATG, Panzers with MS's for INF support.

- Parachuting missions to England with over 80+ people in 3-4 Junkers.

- Transport ships sailing to England with 4-5 panzers (taking hours!)

- pre-toe's and driving over 100 panzers to frontline towns for a massive battle.

- Night being night

- Killed while being distracted by sheep

- Defending FB's with 16ID on the frontline, and the ensuing insane FB battles that lasted hours.
