"CONCEPT MODEL" **Suggestion** Mobile Spawn Freighter

10 posts in this topic

Hey guys! If you haven't seen my previous post about a Mobile spawn Freighter suggestion, here is a concept model i've been working on. (it is currently "Naked" meaning no weapons or defensive items)

The way it works is it has to be "Docked" to shore. When "Docked" The Anchor is down, and a few Ramps are deployed. (Note than Enemies, including ATG/Vehicles can move up/down the ramps) But the cool addition is Extra armament; 2x Bofors Twin barrel AA (on sides) the usual 4x 20mm AAA (2 front 2 back) 4x Double or Quad Vickers 30.cal LMG (on sides)

The vehicle can grab vehicles, and unstow them(Using the Crane) it leaves the vehicles open for flank shots. And while there will be a "FRU" Like object within the hull of the ship, it will not take much to "Kill" the "FRU" Some examples are: Sinking Ship, Direct hit to "FRU" Excessive Damage done to ship, Ship Crew KIA, or a Flaming Ship.

The ship offers many fighting positions (using the ship as cover, or the not shown sandbags) If the ship is sinking, and you are caught inside. You will die(Drown) when over 95% of the ship is sunk. The ship offers mainly defense against Enemy aircraft, it relies on its Naval units to protect it from enemy ground units. (do note that if a enemy unit gets inside, and spawn camps... then TUFF!)

Other than infantry spawns, it would be kinda cool to add a Vehicle spawn for maybe (5 IFV's) to be able to spawn inside the hold compartment, but will require the ship operator to crane you to the battle. (you're a open target!)

So without ado, here are the pictures!

It's certainly been discussed before but great to see new life in the idea - would really love to see something like this in game.

Nice idea except that, at it's peak, there was maybe six people on the entire server who had the patience to sail freighters.

Slow real-time movement speeds, no AI support at all for ships (autopilot, AA guns, etc) made using freighters a painful experience.

Basically a typical attack to/from England went like this:

After an hour of maneuvering, 4 freighters would sail up to position near a dock. 1 of them would tap the side of the dock at 0.00005 kph and instantly sink. The remaining 3 would begin loading tanks, trucks, guns and infantry galore. After several more hours of loading each... individual... unit... by... hand... about 1/4th of the force would have despawned from "disconnect errors" (read: sheer boredom). Finally they'd go underway to England.

Two hours later... another 25% of the attacking units have mysterious disconnected, leaving only half the original attack group. They have made it nearly 1/5th of the way to their destination.

Three hours later... one of the freighters CTDs, wiping out everyone on board with it. Since no one is actually at their computers anymore this is not noticed until the next day.

Five hours later... a lone aircraft spots the transports and immediately despawns in midair to switch to a bomber. Within thirty seconds he is joined by another 2,755 bombers of various sizes. They swarm to the location of the freighters and sink them all in under five minutes, including flight time.

The end.

Now... is making freighters into a mobile spawn vehicles a good idea? Yes, it's a great idea. So great that it's already been suggested at least a dozen times already, in fact. Yet no amount of this greatness will change the fact that, due to the plethora of other failures that is the WW2OL freighter experience, no one will ever use them.

Search in harbour forum, been gone over for at least 10 years.

That should give you a clue on resource priority for this feature.
