ATG recoil at long range

I was viewing (and attempting to shoot) a Pak40 at about 1/3-1/2km. It was obliquely faced (45 degree angle) and firing at another tank. What made it hard trying to shoot it, was its recoil. Everytime it would fire it would lurch back 15-20 meters and then back to position.

I have a hunch this happens with a lot of the ATGs. Is the predictor guessing it's high rate of backwards motion (albeit a short distance) is much farther and then corrects it?
