Mortars nearby cause bullet whiz sound (sometimes) #3813

xanthus was shooting a mortar near me, and all of a sudden the mortar sound started being prepended with a really loud ricochet sound, like a bullet whizzing by. So instead of the mortar boing it went zaaaap-boing. It happened every time until he was killed.

Come to think of it, maybe this was intentional, ie the mortar shell made the sound? In that case, it seemed strange that it would come half a second before the mortar went off, and since I was only ~50m away, the sound travel time should be negligible.

It's not consistent, with a mortar I only heard it once more and that was when *I* fired the mortar. Sometimes I hear that zaap (I think it's supposed to be the sound of a bullet flying by you) in conjunction with other sounds, too.

I get this frequently when mortars are fired, if i had to nail it down, it is as if, the mortars are flying over me, and making a high pitch whizz noise, like the 3rd person mg fire whizzing by sometimes, its a horrible noise btw!

I've heard this sound bug. I passed a mortar position consisting of 3 mortars and could hear the rounds whiz past in the air (all 3 distinctly) prior to the mortar firing sound being played. It sounds to me as if the rounds are missing my ear by inches. It sounds very much like a large object moving quickly past my ear.

Thanks guys. Ticketed #3813.

Be really nice if we could nail down a replication method.

I managed to get it consistently offline, but not in the training area: I just spawned at Brussels-Wavre depot and fired some smoke rounds at around 100m. A little after the smoke sound came the whiz sound.

EDIT: A German mortar, by the way. (Just occurred to me the sounds might be different.)

I can confirm this (and also that it doesn't happen in the training area). In this case it's associated with the mortar round landing, in my original case it was clearly associated with the round being fired.

That's an awful sound, btw! I've never heard mortar rounds passing by me, but I have heard artillery and that sounded more like the rumble from a very fast airplane. I can't imagine a 60mm round making that zippy sound.

Besides, my impression was that the buzzing sound only happens from rifle ricochets because the bullet tumbles after impact. The primary round is supersonic and makes a sharp crack. (ArmA does this very well, I think. It would be even more awesome if the source of the crack was correctly placed where the bullet passes closest to your head in space, so the sound processing magic of the X-Fi cards could make you hear how close it was.)
