Battleground Europe: PC 1.30-1.31 Benchmark Survey

This is a test to compare 1.30 performance with 1.31 on the PC. The test is in two parts:

  • Testing 1.30 with new executables
  • Testing 1.31 beta.

USING THE BENCHMARKING EXECUTABLES

During this test, you will make changes to different Video settings in your Preference tab and respawn into the game. All tests will be run offline.

  1. Download the 1.30 Benchmark executables (5 MB)
  2. Decompress this .rar file (most Zip/Unzip applications can do that).
  3. Open your Battleground Europe folder (C:\Program Files\CRS\Battleground Europe)
  4. Rename the following .exe files:
  5. - WW2_SSE2.exe -] WW2_SSE2_good.exe
  6. - WW2_x86.exe -] WW2_x86_good.exe
  7. Copy the 1.30 Benchmark executables to that \Battleground Europe\ folder
  8. Run your preferred version of the executable by double-clicking it.
  9. Perform the simple tests below.

Benchmark Tests: 1.30

These are simple tests that ask you to set a preference, enter some commands, sometimes spawn a particular unit and and record a value. Note that you will not be able to maneuver when running some of these tests.

  1. Launch the game offline, go to the Preferences tab and select Best Performance (this is the default on a fresh install, but it is good practice to double-check this).
  2. If prompted to restart, please restart.
  3. Go to the Offline Spawn list (the main screen when offline).

Test 1: Benchremagen

  1. Open the chat bar and enter ".benchremagen" then press Enter World. The client will then spawn you in near Remagen looking north into the town. Wait few moments for the scene to fully load.
  2. Press NumLock to bring up the Game Info HUD element.
  3. Record the FPS displayed. (Do not despawn yet). 1: Benchremagen FPS_____

Test 2: Benchvehicles

  1. With the client still spawned in, open the chat bar and enter ".benchvehicles". A bunch of vehicles will be spawned in at various distances and rotations. It will look kind of crazy.
  2. Wait a few moments then record the FPS displayed. 2: Benchvehicles FPS_____
  3. Press Escape and Despawn.

Test 3: Benchantwerp

  1. Open the chat bar and enter ".benchantwerp"
  2. You will be spawned in the air south of Antwerp with the city in view.
  3. Wait a few moments then record the FPS displayed. 3: Benchantwerp FPS_____
  4. Press Escape and Despawn.

Benchmark Tests: 1.31 beta

Now to do the same benchmarks in the 1.31 beta version.

  1. Download the 1.31 beta from the Open Beta Downloads thread and install it. (Version 1.31.0.40: Patch, Full Install )
  2. Open your Battleground Europe TEST folder (C:\Program Files\CRS\Battleground Europe TEST)
  3. Run your WW2.exe by double-clicking it.
  4. Go to the Preferences tab and select Best Performance.
  5. Perform the benchmark tests below.
  6. If prompted to restart, please restart.
  7. Go to the Offline Spawn list (the main screen when offline).

Test 1B: Benchremagen

1B: Benchremagen FPS_____

Test 2B: Benchvehicles

  1. With the client still spawned in, open the chat bar and enter ".benchvehicles". A bunch of vehicles will be spawned in at various distances and rotations. It will look kind of crazy.
  2. Wait a few moments then record the FPS displayed. 2B: Benchvehicles FPS_____
  3. Press Escape and Despawn.

Test 3B: Benchantwerp

  1. Open the chat bar and enter ".benchantwerp"
  2. You will be spawned in the air south of Antwerp with the city in view.
  3. Wait a few moments then record the FPS displayed. 3B: Benchantwerp FPS_____

The bechvehicles scenes don't have anywhere near the same units setup. They don't look comparable at all to me. 1.30 have a bunch of ATGs and stuff on the ground right in front of you. in 1.31 there are just some ships, 111s and 109s floating up in the air.

It is all we're going to get for benchmarking.

Apples to oranges is better than apples to nothing.

May I ask why? Just out of interest...

It's not a perfect comparison due to the slight differences already discussed, but this comparison finally gave as close to an apples to apples comparison between 1.30 and 1.31 as we've seen. Looks like performance differences will be negligible for the majority of the gaming time for me, which is excellent.

Done and submitted. Does it matter which beta version we use to benchmark? I used the latest as of this writing (1.31.0.40).

THe problem is that the benching stuff in 131 is way different than 130 and it doesn't travel backwards.

I noticed a big improvement with the Antwerp benchmark and it looks like it's due to the number of buildings rendered being dependent upon player location. More and more buildings fill in as you come closer to town which is a bit disconcerting but otherwise an acceptable compromise in the name of performance.
