Feedback - Grenade and Mortar Effects

The hand gernade explosion effect just doesn't look like a hand grenade explosion, sorry. It looks more like a white smoke puff suddenly popping up and vanishing...

The explosion effect should be first a small flash and almost at the same time a smaller, thick dark gray exploding effect, small dirt particles kicked around with gray smoke fading away over a larger area. Similar to the new bomb explosion effect...I like all the other effects of 1.31 but the grenade explosion is simply sub standard. The same applies to the rifle grenade and mortar explosions (guess they use the same explosion effects set?)

Maybe even make the dirt particles ODE tracked for a very short moment, no idea how much processing this would take.

Come on guys, the game is so pretty now, please invest just a bit more time into the grenade explosion effects. You know those small effects really make or break a games appearence.

Maybe a little light on dark days but I dunno about needing any explosion. Most fo the videos show this looking like a big firecracker going off.

Probably too much smoke now but certainly no need for fire ball.

Let's get more feedback on this.

As I recall from the hand grenade testing when I did my military service there wasn't much of a visible explosion, just a bit of dust flying around and som shrapnel of course, not that much smoke really..

But then again, different types of grenades perhaps.

Gophur I agree, not really a big explosion should happen. Just a VERY small bang when it goes off.

When we were training with modern hand grenades in the military (like 5 years ago) there was indeed a very small flash, it is just a small one.

Yes I know it is very unprofessional to show other games how they do this, but here are some example that are pretty good IMO

here the very old Day of Defeat game does it pretty good IMO, maybe the explosion is too big, but the rest with the smoke and partices are cool.

Real life hand grenade footage (live grenades):

M67 frag grenade in usual outdoor terrain

Here you can see the small flash:

Another M67:

US military grenade training:

Canadian Army training with C13 (same as M67)

Another training video, this one is pretty cool:

Those are some great videos. The ones the US troops are using, the M67 frag grenade has six ounces of composition B. From a distance the explosion is pretty underwhelming especially with what Hollywood has conditioned people to expect.

I can't remember the explosive weights of the allied/axis ww2 grenades used in game but it's important to note that any munition with a TNT main charge will produce a thick black smoke regardless of where it detonates.

like this on the preview pic... ofc smaller

i dont like fireballs too... way too much hollywood-like... a grenade explosion is for me an explosion that whirls alot of mud and earth

or this for the 250kg bombs :)

You can't use motion pictures as a reference, there's nothing realistic about those. :P

True but you can't use IRL either because it fails to convey the sense of immersion through the 4th wall.

BoB doesn't look like real life but it sure LOOKS like real life.

Slow-mo nade

On another note the smoke off blown up buildings is also to white, needs to be more black, imo.

Oh and the rise of flight explosions looked great.

Still more work needs to be done here imo...

First of it being making the explosion darker, more gray not white...

The mortar rounds we have probably aren't much more powerful than a grenade blast anyway. They shouldn't look like heavy artillery.
