Feedback - Night and overcast lighting

We made some changes a while ago but it looks like they didn't ship. These changes brighten night and overcast values so that gamma is not needed.

We need your feedback on them.

You can test this offline by using the .rain command to cycle weather and the f11 key to cycle time.

Please compare this to 1.30 if possible.

These changes will be release in 1.31.0.43.

Isn't [.43] what we beta tested last night?

Do you mean they'll be shipped in [.44]?

Ya know, at first Romsburg, you rubbed me the wrong way and I wasn't a fan. But over the past 12 months, you have really grown on me. You're precise, well spoken and although you are sometimes a little harsh, you are most often correct and in proper context with your responses.

I logged in when it was overcast during the day and thats what I thought night should look like to make it playable for me. But as far as overcast during the day it was way to dark.

Everything ok for me, I have no idea why anybody could say it is still too dark, Gophur I have a serious suggestion. In the game options include a guide to calibrate a monitor, you know the pictures with the different colors and different shades of gray, then the last 3 tones of gray have to be visible, then the screen is calibrated ok,

What do you think?

Could be an easy fix and everybody would pretty much experience the same lightning and visibility...

We have that covered..Everyone here has the gamma strip correct, not a gamma issue.

I think the light values now are good at all times, cloudy or not.

I would love to see the middle of the night almost pitch black, but I know I'm in the minority there.record>

I remember the very first time I logged in. Allies had mostly been pushed back and the fight was in Veurne. It was pitch black and I could see almost nothing except when grenades or bombs popped off. Crazy good fun. :)

Found something interesting, could a few bits of those, maybe just an image or two, be incoperated into the game settings?

http://www.graphics.cornell.edu/~westin/gamma/gamma.html

For example those two pics?

You should see a difference in the black area, there is a "T" visible if you adjusted you gamma right:

Here you should be able to be able to see the differences of the gray tones.

The night is just to bright, it's almost as day in my view.

And I have no gammaadjustment on here.

Exactly my opinion, one can even see better than on days with overcast. A bit more brighter than in 1.30 is fine but night is supposed to be dark and not grey-blue.

At night one should be more dependent on sounds and muzzle flashes than at day, but as it is now thats not necessary anymore.

Day is too grey.

Overcast is too grey and too dark

Night is way too bright, and too grey.

Overall contrast bit too low (even on high GPU contrast)

It all looks better without post rendering filter (night still too bright)

AND IMAGE. NIGHT HOW IT IS | HOW ID LIKE IT

This is why this T test I posted should get put into the game...

Problem is of course that some people will gamma cheat and then everyone else will either be pissed or feel they are forced to gamma cheat or both. No winners.

Daylight is not realistic ... it seems that there is no sun just sky overcast with clouds .. very different from the 1:30 ...

Two ways to fix the problem:

1. Killer personally visits every player's home, adjusts their video system to Rat Standard, and superglues the controls in place. Don't like it because of your room lighting, your own eyesight, whatever? Tough, play some other game.

2.

2a. Add Hchris's night-setup tests to the game.

2b. Make it much more clear to all players--not just the few that hang around in the Forums--that CRS can't magically make the night-game the same for every different set of player conditions, and each player is obligated to adjust their gamma, brightness and contrast to pass the provided tests.

2c. Calibrate all the Rat Central monitors, and design the game for a moderate moonlit night as viewed per that calibration.

2d. Eliminate all of the night-glow texture features.

2e. Add black-fog vision limits and black-on-black rendering of far LODs at night, so that no matter how much gamma boost is used, vision distances don't get any longer.

2f. Add momentarily much brighter explosions and muzzle blasts, and as soon as possible add flares and starshells with very high momentary brightness, so that players with gamma and brightness jacked up beyond what's needed to pass the setup tests are disadvantaged.

There will always be cheaters no matter what...

One problem is cheap monitors. People spend a lot on their computers only to get a cheap crappy monitor that just doesn't cut it. It's one of the things that should be spent a bit extra on instead. I know, I did the same once and ended up with a monitor that I had to adjust gamma to see anything during daytime!

It's not fair to compare with other games as well, very very few games have a shift in day/night like this game does.

Just a thought, I have only been playing for a year and a half, but I dont remember the darkness ever mentioned as being a prob. in 1.30, not once. And we have day and night in 1.30. Why is it that when the beta first came out and some of us complained that it was too dark, all of a sudden now its our crappy cheap monitors that we dont know how to calibrate thats the prob. I can see perfectly the T scale and the grey scale, and have properly calibrated my monitor. It was too dark at first, now the day is perfect to me even on overcast days, but the night is too bright, sorry gophur, I know how hard you are working to get it right, just giving feedback.
