Bad directional sound quality

1.31 has caused a very serious decrease in directional sound quality when you are relatively close to an enemy.

Since directional sound is a big issue on the battlefield, this is imho a considerable downside with 1.31., that I hope will be fixed. 1.30 directional sound was far superior. I also get static noise now.

At longer range the directional sound seems ok, but still worse than 1.30, at close range, its almost non functional. An enemy tank 450m from you- I cant tel if he is to the north or west from me based n sound.

My sound system is pretty straight forward- Sound Blaster xfi live card with 5.1. output.

Not sure what you mean. Im talking about 3D sound, i.e. in 1.30., you could hear where a shot was firing from, where a tank engine came from etc.

In 1.31 this is much more difficult and at close range impossible. I have a very typical sund system, so Im prety sure others have the same issues.

To me, sound is half the game, and its just far worse than under 1.30 in regard to directional sound.

Would be nice with some feedback from CRS on this- did the sound system change, are they aware of this, is it just my system, whatever?

I had the same issue until I changed from software to hardware in the sound options!

The may be an issue specific to you. I was playing last night interdicting axis tanks, and I had absolutely no trouble locating what direction they were coming from.

In the ingame settings set sound to hardware.

In the ingame settings set sound to hardware.

If the game wont take a change to "Hardware" then go to Documents/Battleground Europe and find the wwiiol XML file. Delete it and then rebuild your video settings in game, including a change to "Hardware"for sound.

OK, Hin beat me to it. But now you know where the file is.

Im a big sound guy too and 1.31 is also great for audio, tho I had to drop to 64 sounds from a full plate that I had with 1.30. I have 7 MAudio speakers in my office and you should hear a full attack on them turned up loud. My dogs start howling.

No for Once I have to agree with DOCH

I did some testing on 7.1

Engine sound will pop between back speakers and center speaker dependent on the speed you are traveling.

I tested in Stug IIIG.

And yes I have hardware set.

In 1.30 this did not happen so its very distracting with the sound popping all over the place.

But yes we do not have the fidelity we had in 1.30 it got lost along the road.

But general the issue appears after some time you have spawned in in 232 but is permanent in Stug IIIIG

I will raise a thread whne I have found some amp SW that can show how the sound pops from back speakers to front speakers.

Will also test 5.1 could be a 7.1 issue

Cheers

The only time I've had this happen, the sound card had not been set to the correct speaker settings. Otherwise I have not detected any differences wrt directional sound, and I've never heard that 1.31 included any changes to the sound system at all.

I'll try the suggestions in this forum tonight, but fyi I was noticing the same thing as the OP -- 1.30, directional sound was fine, but in 1.31 I didn't even feel like I was getting stereo, much less 5.1. I was hearing a tank fairly close and turning in a complete circle and the sound didn't change what-so-ever. In 1.30 I could have told you the exact direction but in 1.31 it was like the sound was coming from "everywhere".

Did some more testing

If I drive forward in StuG IIIG I have engine noise in Center front speaker.

If I drive backwards I have no engine noise in Center front speaker.

Also if I drive slowly there is no engine noise

When I start up there is no engine noise but when I hit higher speeds it shift to front center speaker.

Anybody got some sound mixer software thats 7.1 aware so I can document this.

Either that I have to ditch 7.1 or the game

Cheers

Same as highlighted problem here, was in a sherman, and the sound would suddenly drop, then pass from the rear speakers to the front, then sound was resumed as normal, this happened a few times on my drive to town.

Direction seems to be fine for me though, just that odd engine audio bug. Not really noticed if i get it as infantry, but i suspect that i do, just not noticeable since there isnt a constant rumble of engine to be heard...

did you know in a Stug 3G and 3B if you press O as the gunner you'll gain some hearing.

cannot visually see a hatch open or something, but it does increase hearing like something opened.

oh and yea direction and distance sound quality is poor.

hardware or software same thing, vehicles sound like they're within 100m of you at all times, even if at 2KM.

closer you are to a vehicle the worse the directional audio becomes, sound bleeds into the other speakers more than it should.

I had a very similar problem that I noticed first when flying - the plane's engine noise would switch between L and R speakers depending on my bank angle and some other things. It was completely resolved by changing between hardware/software sound in the prefs menu.
