1.31 Maxing out 4870

Sinse I downloaded 1.31 both the online and offline is maxing out my 4870. The activity shows it at 99% and stays there untill I close the game. All my settings are at their lowest. The temps. are higher than in 1.30. I have to turn the fan up to about 80% to keep it reasonably cool.

In 1.30 the activity maxed out at 40-60%. The temps ran 5-10degrees cooler.

I have checked this under Windows Vista 64bit Home Premium and under Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and the result is the same. I recently got Windows 7 so that is why I tested this under Vista as well. I wanted to make sure it wasn't the OS.

My graphic card driver is 8.7 and my Catalyst verson is 10.5. I have tried different Catalysts and it is the same with all of them.

When the game of online and offline is running the physical memory is at 49% under Windows 7 and 51% under Vista. The CPU usage isn't much under either OS and the temps are fine remaining at 35C and below.

I don't know what the problem could be but it dosen't look good when Catalyst shows the graphic card activity maxed out at 99%. I have played other games and so far none have maxed out the card activity at 99%.

Any thoughts?

Using vsync reduces the load on the GPU in most cases.

Make sure to force vertical sync in setting in the driver.

What resolution do you play at?

Also do you have Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering enabled? If so what setting are they at?

My resolution is at 1920x1080. I use my 52" Sony Bravia as my monitor and TV. No they are both on lowest settings.

Also, I tried the Vsync and it's still maxing out my activity on the card and I'm also starting to see speckles in the game...like a glitter effect. I've found a few ways to get the game working better, but this part is still bothering me as I'm afraid of damaging the card.

A full GPU load is not unusual and your measurement software is not reliable anyway.

Those artifacts are a sign that your GPU or GPU memory gets too hot. Make sure that you do not use software that modifies the standard fan settings like rivatuner and so on.

I have a 4870 on my MacPro and run at 1920x1200 at 24" with everything on and it doesn't happen to me. The only time I hear the fans is if I get up close to a bunch of leaves. With vsync on the card should not be doing more than 60Hz. Maybe the driver you are using has some issues?

You GPU heatsync may be filling up with a fine coating of dust. Pull the card out and take a closer look, you may need some compressed air to give the heatsync a good cleaning.

P.S. WARNING!!! DO NOT inhale the Compressed air :)

Haha...I already did that. The temps haven't reach a dangerous level yet. The problem is that something is overloading the card...causing the activity to spike. This of course may cause the temps to go unexpectedly.

My 4870 is always at 80-100% when the game is running, both in 1.31 and 1.30. That doesn't mean much, just that it's executing something. (The fact that there's a noticeable increase in temp when you look at leaves through binos reliably tells you that it's working harder in that situation.)

I'm puzzled by people thinking that it shouldn't be at 100%. The game should render as many fps as possible, for crying out loud. It should be at 100%.

No it shouldn't, anything beyond 60fps is simply a waste - ideally you should use vsync and have to locked to the monitor cycle. Your eye can't tell the difference other than tearing (due to mismatch with the refresh) appearing in your display.

That's fair, though I'm not sure that I want 50 fps to turn into 30 because of vsync. I might prefer some tearing over that, 30 is noticeably chunky I think. 15 instead of 25 makes it downright impossible to do something that takes motion estimation.

Offline or maybe flying I can get >60fps, but I never had over 60 fps online on the ground last night. The fps difference off vs online is huge.

mmmm should see ww2ol on a 3d Tru 120hz monitor running 120fps

To bad you can't ever see 120fps on 1.31 for the time being : \

works great on other games though.

Quad GTX 480s and twin Core i7 Extreme with 24 GB of RAM would do it.
