When it first came out the white rotating number representing 1km markers was black most of the time but would sometimes flicker to become visible, so if you jostled the plane around a bit you could get a readout.

However, I find that these days the dial is completely black.

I don't know how this escaped being fixed for so long, maybe because most people who fly the ju52 don't find it to be relevant?

However, back when paras came out I specialized in flying the Ju52 for paradrops and I find it important to be able to quickly tell the difference between 2km and 3km or 4km or 5km as I'm gaining altitude to the target (instead of just looking out the window and taking a while to guess based on the way the horizon and clouds look).

Also, with the way altitude changes from town to town, it can sometimes be disorienting to not have the 1km marker. When you descend rapidly to drop height from several kilometers high, you don't want to be guessing about how many times you saw the dial rotate around in order to determine your exact height.
