Infantry not rendering when attacking you from range #4417

I was a PaK40 in Huy earlier today on defense. There was en EMS East of town and as I was pushing the gun out into position I started taking ATR fire from the East hill. I scanned and saw nothing, but then out of the corner of my eye I saw a muzzle flash. I waited and I saw it again up across the river on the hill. The range was under 1km as it's ~1.1km to the top of the hill and he was about 2/3rds down the hill, so he should have been visible. I was near the ATG bunkers SE of the AB. Muzzle flash was clear as day and, in my mind, unmistakable. I also heard the audio of the shot and saw the bullet impact close to my gun.

You're saying he wasn't in cover or anything, just out in the open, and you still couldn't see him?

He may have been in concealment that wasn't rendering for me or something, but because of the distances involved, as I understand it, it should not have been an issue. There were no berms or terrain features that I could see. My assumption was that he was in the perma tall grass that's scattered throughout the map, but the grass wasn't rendering and so the EI wasn't either. Something like that, anyway. Still, given that I know it was sub 1km range, he should have been rendering for me. As I recall, the terrain I was looking at had no shrubbery or concealment of any kind rendering for me.

Okay, after some offline testing here's what I've found:

1) Spawn into Huy with anything, in this case I used a 232.

2) Stop outside the East exit of the AB. As I look towards the hill due East of the AB I can see that it is barren, no bushes or grass will render. Oddly enough, I see bushes and grass rendering from the continuation of this hillside as I look SE and S.

3) I then drive to my position where I started to take fire, which was about 50.30.38N by 5.15.12E +/- 1 second. I look towards the hill and still see nothing in the way of bushes or grass.

4) I drive straight towards the hill and none of the concealment renders until I reach 50.30.37N by 5.15.30E. At this point I see a bush in basically the exact spot I recall the muzzle flashes coming from. It is logical to assume this was where the EI was hiding and firing at me from. I should mention that I needed to move laterally South in order to see past the trees to the spot where I saw the muzzle flash coming from, but this is not where I measure distance from. Driving straight towards the hill from the spot I took fire from puts trees in your way, but along the periphery you can easily see when the bushes 'pop' up and render.

5) The location of the bush, and where I reasonably believe the muzzle flash came from, is 50.30.36N by 5.16.10E. The distance from the point I took fire to where I saw the muzzle flash is ~766m. The point at which bushes start to render on this particular hillside is ~530m. These distances calculated with a web-based range calculator for this game, verified by range-finding equipment on the Tiger with distances of 750m and 550m. These distances coincide with the range calculator's distance information.

6) If I reverse from the position where the bushes begin to render, they do not disappear or un-render until past 1km. I did not bother ranging this point as it is moot being that EI won't render past this range anyway.

7) If one respawns immediately into the area, the bushes render from the get go. That is, if I re-spawn my 232 from the AB in Huy and drive to the East gate and look at the East hillside, I see the bushes that previously were not rendered to me. If I go somewhere else, the default spawn location at Area 51 for example and come back to Huy, then the same rendering issues present themselves.

So what I gleaned from this is that, for whatever reason, stuff on the East hill in Huy does not render until you get close to it. In this case, ~530m. This obviously presents quite a problem because the enemy can see you from concealed positions and fire on you. If I had, had my ATG setup and not moving, chances are the enemy ATR would have killed my crew and I would have had no chance to accurately return fire unless I pushed my gun 200m directly into his oncoming fire. As it stands, when I saw the muzzle flash, I deployed and starting firing HE rounds at that location. The rounds landed dead on where I saw the flashes coming from and they eventually stopped. On despawn later I noted a damaged ATR, indicating I was correct in my identification of the muzzle flash and its location.

Tested offline in 1.32.2.2 just now and the rendering issues present themselves in the exact same way.

If ei don't render u don't hear them ether. Just fyi

Fair enough, but even though I could hear him and see the muzzle flash I could not see his avatar. I could also not see any of the shrubbery on the hill, even though it is there and should be rendering.

The infantry not rendering sounds about right, they don;t render that far out. The bushes are odd though and I'll ticket that for a look. Not sure when they start to render but will check.

Only if you can replicate it on the test server, otherwise the report has little real value.
