anyone been noticing this or has someone reported it already? everytime i plink a ea then watch him crash due to injured pilot/manouver into ground doesnt award me the kill ever but people get plink kills on me everytime.

thought it might be other people hitting them but ive been hitting lots of ea lifting from their AFs & same thing, shoot em up, they plough into the ground then no kill for my 109. might be some connection with the insta-splode bug.

Maybe it's an anti-douche feature.

*sigh*

I get the same thing alot schloss. From time to time I get similarly killed by "UNKNOWN".

I hate that guy.

We did some testing on the training server with various aircraft combinations. Results were weird as every time we plinked each other and crashed schloss was never awarded a kill while I got it every time. This continued for about 10 tests then we did inf on aircraft plinks. We tried to test if there were certain areas of the planes that were not crediting the killer.

Here's a video of the one we found, we stopped testing after that:

In theory, there is no such thing as a plink kill. If you have not done critical damage (which is specific to each vehicle) then you won't get a kill.

_____________________________________________________________________

Critical damage is:-

Aircraft

Blown the plane up or set it on fire

Removed a wing or part of the fuselage (tail)

Killed the engine

Killed the pilot

Tanks/Tank Destroyers/Armoured cars

Blown the tank up or set it on fire

Killed the engine

Destroyed the main gun

Killed the driver

Killed the gunner

Tracked both sides

Blown the wheels off on either side (Daimler/Panhard/Laffly W15-TCC)

Trucks/Tractors

Set it on fire

Killed the engine

Killed the driver

Blown the wheels/tracks off (either side) <- this includes half tracked vehicles

Manned AA or AT Guns

Killed the gunner

Destroyed the gun

Infantry

They die

_________________________________________________________________

If you experience a kill being awarded (and a kill may not include death of your opponent because it's a weapon kill not a person kill, however some crew deaths are kills) or a death recorded without critical damage being involved, please report this with details of the evidence that supports the report. What was done, who by and who to, how it transpired; and any other circumstances that isolate what happened. If you don't have any such detail, fairly reliably constructed and pointing clearly to the problem (ie: not just a good guess) we won't be able to do anything with your report. We are actively chasing down hundreds of reports and have to pick the ones that are most useful in fixing issues.

NOTE: for those quick to assume incorrectly. Plink kills being a bug and not a feature does not say "they don't exist". It just means they don't exist on purpose. Kills are not just game code, there is also how the database functions as part of the process. It's complicated.

Apparently, they aren't supposed to happen?

Well if you damage an aircraft and then they do critical damage to themselves...by hitting a tree or smashing into the ground or ramming another aircraft; you will get the kill 95% of the time.

There may be some semantics issue with what DOC is saying because plink kills are really easy to test.

I knew it'd never see the light of day in the bug report forum.

I was fairly bewildered by it. I gotta think he's misinterpreted "plink kill".

some plink kills are easy to spot

plane A gets kill credit on plane B

plane A sortie end time is before plane B sortie end time

i dunno why CRS has never noticed this

Looks like he was responding to the OP who asked (as if it were a bug) why he wasn't being awarded a kill after getting a plink on his crashing opponent.

Plink kills have been the norm not the exception as far back as I can remember. Gave one to johnny70 earlier this map. Squaddie put him in, and as I was climbing out I clipped a tree, sploded and gave him the kill.

No

-Fire

-Pilot damage

-Leaks

And all the important bits were still left.

i'ts possible someone else got the plink kill credit

3 ppl plink a plane and then it rams or hits ground, who knows which one is awarded the kill? last one to plink?, or first one to plink?, or closest plink to a crit area?

Sorry but anecdotal evidence isn't able to be verified. Could spend a lot of time and still arrive at no conclusions. Time is a luxury we don't have to spend unless it is on something where it won't be wasted. So some test results and the associated conclusions those results point at is, unfortunately, mandatory.

Not trying to be difficult, just realistic.

PS: perhaps you don't undertstand the issue here. I'm not saying "plink" kills don't happen, I'm saying they are not in the design nor the code that is written to handle kills and the scoring of kills. That means exactly what I posted earlier. So if they DO happen, they are a bug and anecdotal reports don't contribute to the search for where the bug lies; so are ultimately only useful for stating an opinion, rather than solving the problem. I'm only interested in the problem. That means does it exist? How is it replicated? And ultimately, what can we do now that we have found it, to best eliminate it.

"I got a plink kill so what's up with that?!" <- sorry but no good to us

I know that Doc, I understand it's not the information you're after. It's just that the idea of plink kills being a bug not a feature is contrary to all common hangar wisdom.

It's not even something people fight about anymore-> Thread

Well when you deal with the realities of logic as a result of this all being driven by code, which is an on/off-yes/no environment ... I could hardly care less, in managing this ... what "hanger wisdom" *thinks* is going on. ;) In searching for and fixing bugs we have to leave our beliefs behind. This is bug kill fact land in here, ladies and gentlemen.

People are going to argue in a game forum until the world ends. It's what they do. They enjoy it. Some of them seem to actually NEED it. :) It doesn't really mean more than that in the end. Perception will always end up being their reality. Sometimes it will be true and sometimes it will be false, and sometimes a mix of both. But it's still a perception. It's often not a fact and certainly not 100% of the time even if they believe it 100% of the time.

When we finish the bailing out feature and the scoring problems it presents, perhaps plink kills will actually be a feature we control. Right now they can only be a bug, period.

Very interesting. Thanks for explaining how it happens and how it's a bug.

I'm looking forward to the changes bailing creates in game. No doubt for the players it will be a boon for some and a new challenge for others. Either way, it'll be fun! :) I hope you guys continue to tweak aggressively the way you have since 1.31's wide release. PPO's, bailing and other mechanics should add substantially to the game as it exists and as your team moves into the future.

I was under the impression that everyone already knew plink kills were a known bug. Guess it would be confusing for a newer player.

I was always under the impression it was added around the same time around the first damage revamp. Way back in the day the ONLY way to get a kill was to kill the pilot before it was changed so that things like pieces missing, fires, splosions, killed as well.

Meh, I plan to worry about it as much tomorrow as I worried about it in the past.
