Is this a Hack?

I was looking for a more appropriate place to stick this, but I couldn't find it, so I guess here will do, mabey a mod will move it.

They like doing things like that.

Anyhoo

I've playing this Game on and off for around 3 years now, though I can still remember the first day like it was yesterday, when capture points were small bright green bunkers and you had to stand next to a radio.

After all this time I have had my fair share of WTF experiences, I'm convinced my Avatar has a pacemaker considering his favourtie thing to do is too drop dead at a seconds notice.

In regards to this, there have been some more 'extream' wtf moments that even today I still cannot explain, now I'm not going to sit here and claim that there are Hacks for this game, goodness knows I'm sure the fourms were once full of people asking for them or demanding that the allies/axis were using them.

But whatever, all I am going to do is list a few scenario's that have happened, and I'll let you decide, is that a hack?

1. Early days for me still, lucky the allies are winning at this point, we're fighting on an airfield, I'm in a Vickers (nicknamed the AwesomeBox).

A Stug flies past me, it turns and sees me, I panic and hide in a hanger just a shot hits the wall.

I open the commander turret to check if I'm alone, next the Stug 'appears' in the hanger.

and I'm not talking it drive in or anything, it literly appeared in the middile of the hanger, without appantly occupying any space in between here and his previous position, anyway its facing away from me, turns right round and shoots me in the arse.

2. Later days, I'm a french soilder moving through a town that looks exactly like every other town I've currently been too. I'm following another Frog who stops suddenly, theres a solid grey wall in front of us, he throws a grenade over it, and kills the two germans on the other side.

How the hell did he know they were there?

3. Bunker Defense, big German city, ran for what felt like forever to get here, I get in to find a man holding a Mortor, he thanks me for the help, then an armoured car arrives and starts shooting at the bunker.

Mortor man pulls out an anti-tank gun and zaps it from a window

two problems here

i) no I did not mistake a grenade or something for a mortor, it was defanetly a Mortor he was holding, I know this becuase I had to take two looks at his weapon as I'd never seen one before untill this point, so how, did he then pull out a weapon he couldn't possibly have

ii) he fired the anti-tank gun while standing

4. Paratrooping into a town under attack, about 100 or so meters up I spot a jerry running towards a building, hes still some distance away, suddenly he starts running on the spot and in 2 seconds moves through the air onto the roof and starts sniping from it.

5. Part of an armoured convoy, two churchills are behind me, I'm in a Swearbox (crusader II) a 109 passes overhead, it banks left to turn and straf us, before it even finishes turning, one of the churchills turns its turret round and with a single shot takes its wing clean off.

Lucky shot?

at that distance?

on a fast moving plane?

6. Parratrooping again, soon as I land a man holding a rifle runs up to me demanding ammo, which I happily give, he turns and runs ahead and I follow, theres a tank ahead, a panzar 3 i think, he crouches, takes a shot at the tank with his rifle and it explodes.

7. In a Matilda (HappyBox) an armoured car takes out my gunner with a single shot at my frontal armour.

8. Defending a bunker, axis are stupidly charging at us through open fields, man next to me has a bren, I know from experience that the standard catradge bren has about 32 bullets (or 28 if your paraniod about it jamming) he fires, and keeps firing, and keeps firing, about 200 bullets later he stops. then fires again.

'Never ending ammooooo, ahhh aahh ahhh haaa'

ok, so I am prepared to admit that 'some' of these might be bugs, others I may of just mistaken something for something else, mabey that churchill was a lucky shot, mabey the guy behind the keyboard jumped up and shout "omg did you see that, that was f*cking epic!".

Other than that there is a possibility that some of these, if nto all of them may be the result of Hacking, cheating or some God Mod for Devs when they get pissed at being killed by something they couldn't see 12 times in a row.

============

Things that arn't bugs or hacks but just annoy me

i) Why are the British using Opels, they have CT15A armoured Trucks ffs

ii) wheres the Bren Carrier?

iii) What no Tetrarch, but it was built specifically for this campaign.

iv) So the Germans get Tigers? and what do the allies get? a Chruchill MK7

Oh Joy, the Tiger never came round till 1943, by this time the Allies had much better tanks and the 17 pounder gun which was immediatly fitting into as many things as possible, why is there no Archer Tank destroyer?

v) We don't get artillary, but we have Destroyers........what?

vi) no costal anti-ship batteires?

vii) When the British found the Anti-Tank gun to be ineffective, they issues the PIAT gun instead (1942), given the similar situation with the Germans and the French I'm sure they would have done the same.

viii) The Crusader was way faster than that.

Other stuff

i) exactly who though a Player Run High Command would be a good idea?

ii) why is there no player mute button in chat?

iii) Oh Be serious, 3 Diffrent Crusader tanks and No Cromwell?

iv) whats with all the golden sheep?

v) no seriously, the Golden sheep?

No idea since you've seen something like this before do you get a high % of packet loss?

2. Later days, I'm a french soilder moving through a town that looks exactly like every other town I've currently been too. I'm following another Frog who stops suddenly, theres a solid grey wall in front of us, he throws a grenade over it, and kills the two germans on the other side.

How the hell did he know they were there?

Strange but not too unlikely that he heard footsteps, saw noone on his minimap which can mean only one thing jerry time.

3. Bunker Defense, big German city, ran for what felt like forever to get here, I get in to find a man holding a Mortor, he thanks me for the help, then an armoured car arrives and starts shooting at the bunker.

Mortor man pulls out an anti-tank gun and zaps it from a window

What kind of building, did it have stairs? Sounds like lag on either your end or theirs then the connection restores and he zooms into correct position. Packet loss perhaps.

5. Part of an armoured convoy, two churchills are behind me, I'm in a Swearbox (crusader II) a 109 passes overhead, it banks left to turn and straf us, before it even finishes turning, one of the churchills turns its turret round and with a single shot takes its wing clean off.

Lucky shot?

on a fast moving plane?

6. Parratrooping again, soon as I land a man holding a rifle runs up to me demanding ammo, which I happily give, he turns and runs ahead and I follow, theres a tank ahead, a panzar 3 i think, he crouches, takes a shot at the tank with his rifle and it explodes.

If he was a paratrooper as well that seems odd but then again it could be a coincidence that something else got him or if he was a regular looking trooper and british could of been a grenadier.

7. In a Matilda (HappyBox) an armoured car takes out my gunner with a single shot at my frontal armour.

Alot of people say this kind of stuff, I'm not too clued up on tank details but i think that guns on tanks work slightly like tracks it has some kind of damage threshold. Some people just know where to hit most of the time, 7 years of this game no doubt there are alot of people that rock at it.

This could easily be the fire bug, people on your client are firing when in reality on their end they are not.

ok, so I am prepared to admit that 'some' of these might be bugs, others I may of just mistaken something for something else, mabey that churchill was a lucky shot, mabey the guy behind the keyboard jumped up and shout "omg did you see that, that was f*cking epic!".

I'm with you here the power should be switched to squads but that's a whole other crazzzy thing.

ii) why is there no player mute button in chat?

Not had to use it but i think .ignore works

iii) Oh Be serious, 3 Diffrent Crusader tanks and No Cromwell?

iv) whats with all the golden sheep?

v) no seriously, the Golden sheep?

Just throwing a few ideas out there, sorry if i'm pointing out anything obvious im not meaning to sound stupid but its hard to grasp a situation from a short few sentences.

This is the bug reporting forum to assist us in getting fixes the game needs and current dev. in test to release quicker and with less issues. However, because you may be new I'll have a stab at this for you:-

i) Why are the British using Opels, they have CT15A armoured Trucks ffs

A: When the game was first created, there were only 2 trucks, and Allied one (Bedford) and an Axis one (Opel) ... the British do not drive Opels and additional trucks outside of the ones currently modeled (which now include the Laffly for the French) are a lower priority for dev. than some other things. Vehicles swallow a lot of dev. resources when we choose to add another one to the game.

ii) wheres the Bren Carrier?

A: It's on a list of hundreds of other vehicles we haven't had the resources to add to the game yet.

iii) What no Tetrarch, but it was built specifically for this campaign.

A: The Tetrach light (airborne) tank was used specifically for and after the Normandy invasion which in reality is a time period we haven't reached in game dev. yet, although we are now arriving at that time frame having begun development of the game in the 1940 time frame. Each time we advance the time frame of the games period modeled we have moved along a line from 1940 to the later years. In rough terms, we are just reaching the early 1944 period now. With that having been said, the game does not adhere strictly to the timeline of the real war but only follows it as a guide, gameplay and dev. issues tend to take precedence when history and game development clash over some point in the timeline.

iv) So the Germans get Tigers? and what do the allies get? a Chruchill MK7

Oh Joy, the Tiger never came round till 1943, by this time the Allies had much better tanks and the 17 pounder gun which was immediatly fitting into as many things as possible, why is there no Archer Tank destroyer?

A: At the time this was the best compromise of available resources to model things, and other vehicles are on that same list the Bren Gun Carrier is on. The list is a long one and it's fair to say it will never be fully realized as this would amount to hundreds if not thousands of vehicles we will never be able to model in our lifetime. We have to add new tanks according to many criteria/demands here that shape those choices, of which "it existed" is but a minor element to be considered.

v) We don't get artillary, but we have Destroyers........what?

A: The two are not related in terms of how they came to be. Destroyers were added as an expansion of the naval aspect of the game at a time when there was only 1 boat available. Artillery is an entire subset of game engine code and gameplay features that hasn't even been written yet, but will be at some point in time.

vi) no costal anti-ship batteires?

A: There are coastal anti-ship batteries in the game, around all of the "deep water" naval bases ... but these are to date restricted to AI installations. A future feature where players can occupy AI gun positions will probably be the first "player controlled" anti shipping battery unless of course you employ the larger ATG's for this task which players can and do already.

vii) When the British found the Anti-Tank gun to be ineffective, they issues the PIAT gun instead (1942), given the similar situation with the Germans and the French I'm sure they would have done the same.

A: PIATs will be included in the RPAT patch where we add Bazookas and Panzershreks to the game also.

viii) The Crusader was way faster than that.

A: Um ... no it wasn't. We research vehicle performance very thoroughly here, but in some cases a website record you might refer to will differ from our research. This is to be expected.

Other stuff

i) exactly who though a Player Run High Command would be a good idea?

A: We did, but to be truthful it is more of an evolution of many contributing factors and events over time rather than a "set design" we implemented. In some ways it was an experiemnt as this evolution grew out of game development and design that resulted from actual gameplay that players created and we adapted in code to try to match their expectations. This had never been done before (and probably still hasn't) so the "experiemnt" nature of it is really just a part of the whole not having a model to use as none had ever existed previously thing.

ii) why is there no player mute button in chat?

A: Usw .ignore xxxxx where xxxx = the player you wish to mute and you'll never hear from them again.

iii) Oh Be serious, 3 Diffrent Crusader tanks and No Cromwell?

A: The A-13 is not a Crusader although yes, the Crusader series was developed from design concepts that were incorporated in that tank. Given our dev. priorities and demands of the games development upon our small team, this was the most efficient way to meet these conflicting criteria.

iv) whats with all the golden sheep?

A: "Sheep" are part of an urban mythology and deeply spun history of the early PvP online gaming universe we sprang from as far back as the earliest days even before there was an internet. As far fetched as that may seem to some it is none the less true. We needed a "monument" type object to mark city or towns as map features (the heirarchy is quite complex and rely on code issues I won't go into here) and the golden rampaging sheep was Roger Long's (our original lead artist back in the beginning days) .. were his idea of meeting this need with a little humour and light heartedness, at the same time honouring our roots in a way only the veterans of online PvP gaming from it's beginnings might fully understand.

v) no seriously, the Golden sheep?

A: We have since the earliest days of the games development, which has always been a continuous cycle that exists right up to today (more than 10 years) ... honoured the passing of our players at the special request of their friends. When the game was still in the alpha to beta transitional phase before release in 2001, one of our dearest friends and a closed beta tester named "Carrot" passed away (he was the first actually) and being from the region of the world known as Australia/New Zealand where sheep have a legendary and historical signifigance (New Zealand is the only country in the world with more sheep than people) we chose to honour him with a place on the golden sheep statue. Shorty thereafter we lost Burbank (an Australian) and he joined Carrot in that same place of honour. He was both a personal friend of ours and my publisher at the time.

I hope this helps explain a few things. Remember, the game is never finished, and was never intended to be. Our plan was always to develop it constantly for as long as both it and we were still here to do so, from whatever small beginnings were ours to grasp and onto wherever it took us in the future.

It would be fair to say that a lot of that future is uncharted waters, and always will be, because we started by breaking new ground that had never before been done and we will in all liklihood continue to do so.

When stuff runs in place, or jumps location instantly, or even flied through walls, that is because either you or the other player's internet connection dropped momentarily (either at the ISP or somewhere in between that and the game servers). At that point your client continues to update the vehicle/player based on where it was moving to since it has no new data to work with. Assuming the net connection returns (within a short time) then you get updated with the new correct locations and everything updates to where they really are.

Happens to me a fair amount as my local cable loop is overloaded.
