Trees blocking bullets

I prone/stand next to a tree in a forest ... 1m left/right of it. i see an EI... aim... shoot... but my bullet hits the "tree" although im 1m left of tree. i see the bullet impact just in front of my rifle in mid-air. nevertheless the EI can hit me.

is there a hidden wall around those trees ??

in this state trees are absolutely useless... when you can hide only behind the trunk... but the tree is blocking your shots like 1m extra to every side

its like the same stuff with those railing in spawn CPs at top of the roof. you can see through them... but bullets get blocked

The answer to this from way back is that the tree is not a perfect cylinder that sticks straight up out of the ground, but the invisible collision model *is*.

(Maybe not a cylinder per se, maybe the cross-section is a hexagon or whatever4, but anyway...)

So the collision modle needs to be big enough to contain that visual tree trunk, otherwise, if were smaller, when you are completely behind it, other people could still shoot you *through* the edges of the tree trunk.

It masy also be true that the same collision model is being used on different tree models, so it may be a bit worse on some than others, but I don't know about that for sure.

the fact that you can still be shot just means part of you is exposed. Your rifle is on your centerline, but your shoulder and legs are not, so while your rifle is blocked by the collision model of the tree, a good portion of your avatar is vulnerable.

If you're going to argue with Romz, do your homework before you post. He gets it, and you can't teach common sense, you have to be born with it.

The previous post explains it pretty well.

1 meter seems very excessive though. I'm not sure if 2 ingame trees side by side even make 1 meter.

Your rifle is on your centerline,

Is this correct? I though you may be at more of a disadvantage when you are to your left of a tree because you fire right handed you would need more clearance on the left side of a tree. Edited by martinv

I meant centerline of your vision, center of the screen, etc, but all your body parts are farther from that center. So if the center is blocked, the farther parts are not blocked.

The position when prone is not symmetrical, so you are correct about one side being more vulnerable to exposure.

doesnt matter if im right or left of tree ... same result

ill try to note the position of the tree next time i find one

looks like there are some sort of trees where this problem occures

Many updates ago, I forget which one, you all of a sudden could clip inside trees and had the ability to kill others outside the tree and were invincible from within. This was posted in the bugs forum and the answer was the invisible cylinder you see around trees now so you can't get into them.

  • 3 weeks later...

I guess this is the same thing as when I'm tanking and my shots hit the tree, even though the barrel appears to be clear of the side of the tree?

Very annoying and often ends in death even though you are in prime position if the tre was not there.
