More testing with 109 showed strange anomalies with bionic ears. 109F4 vs D520 range 350m could hear dead 6 clearly by looking at left wing. looking at right wing 250m before audio. D520 merge no audio coming or going. 520 beyond 5-7oclock outboard no audio at any range.

109F4 vs H81 H81 audio did not sound until within 50m of 109 tail. no audio on merge. Audio of H81 passing overhead during pull off loud at 25m drooping out at 200m looking at H81 off left wing high.

Spitfire Mk5 vs 109f2 spitfire has bionic ears similar to the 109 blind spot audio out to 450m. again as with 520v109 merge Spit sounds no audio of 109 on the merge only as it passes. clear audio of 109 to dead 6 beyond 5-7 outside of 150m.

Sometimes only though. sometimes audio would drop 109 moving from L-R over a "cone of silence" area. I'LL post the film for your critic once I've cut it. don't think you want to watch 4-25 minute segments of nothingness to get 4 minutes of audio show and tell.

I'll get it edited and up for you ASAP GOPHUR. but will be in evening on Monday.

I tested today live verse beta.

Set a plane on the airfield full throttle and float it. This decreases the overall volume but distance is not affected. Volume is halved over half distances.

It seems the distance at which you can reasonable hear a plane is halved.

Technically this is not a bug but is correct functionality. It was broken before and was partially fixed in 1.32. However, I'm of a mind that in our big *** world we need to have sound as part of the gameplay attractor.

In other words we want you to audibly hear where the enemy is.

Putting in a ticket to increase this.

I don't know where you sit on the debate so far as being able to hear other planes in your own plane - and it doesn't really matter. I agree that the soundscape of BGE is a huge gameplay factor - especially on the ground. However as you all have heard numberous times - it has a negative spinoff effect in the air. Thank you for working on this Rats. :D

I noticed an increase in the rumbling of my spitfire (looking behind) on the beta server that is not there on the live server. This might help to kill some bionic ears. Could this volume be increased? For all planes?

I like the way the low rumble sounds like a muffled plane enging - but it may be too low an effect. I also noticed that gun sounds are a bit muffled - but that's kinda nice - I'm hoping all sounds are - which I think might be more realistic in these situations. Just posting thoughts/feedback and thanks.

I tested a special build client with boosted sound attenuation today during the Verdun battle test ... I don't think we need to worry too much about the sound levels as a relatively small change improved things quite a bit.

I'd be more concerned with actual bugs where sound is not working at all or is clearly broken than "it's too quiet" type issues right now guys.

We need to get to release ASAP and that means the stuff that's clearly broken should be a top priority. As Dana pointed out "it's too quiet" isn't a bug or actually broken, it's just a setting that we can change, and have changed for the next patch.

Duly noted. In that case, for what it's worth, I've noticed no "bugs" with the new sound engine.

GOPHUR and DOC, thanks guys

My continued testing found something strange.

It's my headset that gives me the bionic ears. I use a microsoft lx300 live chat set.

Playing through my speaker system Logitec 7.1 surround off a GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard I do not hear any aircraft at any range outside 25 meters. With the headset I hear out to about 300 with most in a somewhat directional side based way. look left hear behind from left cup.

Stereo headset 300 at 90 degrees from sight

7.1 suround sound 25 with or without looking around

Could it just be the way we are getting our sound from our computers?

.11 Heard shooting in Verdun from Notredame like it was happening next to me. Thats 700+ meters.

I'm finding distances on small arms are all messed up right now. All rifles sound like they're 5m away.

Just logged out of todays test. Audio seems extremly loud, AIrcraft over head was almost unbearable to a point. Shots that would normally seem 100 meters off were in fact over 400 plus meters away.

Most on during the inf fight noted this. In fact when the blen was buzzing the ground guys I almost had to spawn out. Way loud.

As for directional audio, for which I have had issues with, seem fixed. Again the over powering audio made it quite hard to get a distance fix on the shots fired.

As for anything else during that scrum, all seemed well from my point, again just he audio volume seemed a bit high.

Ok, after much testing today (thank you those who stayed behind to help me) we know where we need to adjust the sound attenuation. Great work. We still have an issue with impact and riccochet levels (way too close to you and don't attenuate well) but we'll fix that too.

S!

Should be very close if not on the mark in v1.33.0.12 patch as far as overall loudness goes, but not sure if the bullet impact sound will be fixed by then.

After 500m it's getting hard to distinguish individual gunshots. We could have stretched this out a bit more to like 700m but then it gets worse at the shorter ranges. Compromise for the global nature of sounds and we cannot at this stage customize each individual one. That would require each sound be individually remastered and then collectively compared, we're way past delivering that kind of redo at this point in time.

I think the next change (mooted to be .12) will be much closer to where it needs to be. It won't be where we WANT it but need and want are often quite seperate things.

Plane sounds were a tad better, attenuation for infantry weapons and vehicles still needs heavy tweaking. Also, sometimes I heard bomb impact sounds before the bomb whistle and the planes engine.

Using the totally new (for our game) Xaudio engine, we are still rewriting things based on beta testing so this isn't going to be "right" for probabl;y a couple more patches. Keep testing and more than anything, do really well managed or controlled testing where you KNOW how far stuff is away, and how it changes as it gets closer and further away.

"I can hear stuff far away like it's right next to me" may be what you experience, but that kind of report cannot, repeat CANNOT help us get to completion any faster.

Sounds seem much better IMHO.GJ! I am experiencing no rain sound, might be on my end but,a palyer who was with me in Verdun, also did not hear it.

My GTX 260,with latest drivers to my belief(8.17.12.6099).

S!

Speed

P.S. In the live server version, sometimes we cant hear satchels placed on the FB,only the smoke. It is ramdom, but frequent.I know its a whole new audio in .33.15.Just a side note.

  • 7 months later...

alright, so since we cant chose the number of sounds that we can hear, many audios just go missing from my perspective when theres moderated or heavy action going on .

Its sooo annoying.

But, when theres nothing going on, I can hear a lonely noise from very very very far. If defending a FB alone, where theres nothing else going on, I can hear planes before even seeing the grey circle.

Havent had the motivation to attack this issue until now... havent played much since patch

I would say your not alone I have the same problem and would say maybe almost more 100 players from both sides.

According to CRS 1.34 will fix this but I couldn't say if it was fix on beta since large battles with EA, AI AA and alot of audio I have not yet encounter.

The way I tested this was to park an invulnerable plane above an enemy factory and then go in as a smg and shoot while the guns were going non stop.

Pretty dramatic improvement for me in beta over live and I didn't really think I had a problem in live so hopefully you'll also see improvement.
