I would prefer that the plane not insta-splode. If I ram then I ram, but how about a wing gets sheered off or my prop gets ripped away and I go into a violet flop. Eh, I don't know.

Agreed that this would be a nicer way to resolve the collision, but we don't have the means to make that a high priority task right now.
