shot a full clip of 20mm AP from a 232 into a matty 2 pounder gun from the side at less than 150m aiming each shot, and not just holding the trigger down. each strike made a penetration mark about mid way along the length of the barrel. it turned it's turret and shot me with the gun i thought i had disabled, killing me instantly.

All gun barrels have a minimum threshold for damage to barrels.

It requires a minimum of the 50mm on the Pz3, or a 2 pounder, to exceed this threshold on most tank main armament. [since both the 50mm and 2 pounder have fiarly similar energy output].

Small caliber barrels are different I think [lower], as is the Tigers main gun. [higher]

Remember, if a 232 or pz2 can damage barrels or tracks. So can the nearly identical rounds fired by the British 20mm hispano mounted on Hurricanes, spitfires, p38's, and P39's. [Which is why the damage threshold is now as high as it is].

if it shows the penetration decal (silver ring with a black circle in the center), doesn't that mean the threshold was reached or surpassed?

No, the hit decals don't understand damage thresholds and joules, they just understand you got an impact and that the round was capable of a penetration against a sheet of plate that thick

the thresholds trump the penetration where we are trying to control a really gamey aspect of you dying a million times just to get good at aiming at gun barrels

in reality, gun barrels were penetrated by 20mm AP ammo but those types of impacts just didn't happen as often as they do in game, so we gave the guns adjustable thresholds to restrict it to the bigger impacts, in your case we are only displaying a penetration decal because a gun barrel really isn't thicker than what a 20mm AP round will penetrate if it was flat plate and had no "barrel threshold" placed on it by us, and the "decal placing code" doesn't know about all that, it's simple and dumb

20mm AP cannot damage ANY tank main gun in the game, it used to but that caused a lot of issues so we changed it to not wiork that way anymore. Obviously some would like that back but then we'd be back to why we changed it in the first place, so no, it isn't going to change.

code, it's not real life and it never will be

unless you're a piece of code yourself :D
