The trees in this game kill FPS. If you zoom in on a cluster of trees your performance will go down to 10-30% of what you usually get. If you use AA or AF this makes the game stutter even on high-end PCs.

To make matters worse, the trees are calculated even if they are not visible on your screen (e.g. if there is a tent in between the tree and your character). This might be the reason why trees in this game have such a big impact on performance whereas other games manage to show much better looking trees without melting your hardware.

As there are trees everywhere in this game and as you often zoom in with rifles or binocs your FPS numbers are all over the place.

There's a fair amount of mis guidance there. Let me clear up.

The trees in this game kill FPS.

That's just not universally true. There can be fill rate issues in any scene and some tree scenes are worse on particular cards but it isn't universal.

While there is no occlussion culling the trees themselves billboard fairly regularly. This is more of a CPU issue than a GPU issue. This is also this way because pilots need to see the trees too.

To the OP, I'm going to need more information. What is your sys spec for starters. I need to be able to replicate it for a coders. Your current report is

  • get in a tank
  • pop commander
  • drive along
  • see 45 second lag spikes

I can;t replicate that given the information presented. Works for me.

Well I'm pretty sure that zooming in on tree-clusters is one of the biggest performance issue for me and I have experienced that issue over 3 generations of AMD cards/CPUs. There are workarounds (e.g. play without AA and AF to increase overall framerate to the degree where the tree's impact doesn't matter), but that makes the game look rather ugly.

I noticed the billboarding, but it doesn't help with this particular problem.

It would be nice if you could design a special low-LOD version of trees which only appears when people use binocs. Something like "if player zooms in replace all trees with sprites".

Alternatively, if you could develop ingame AA and AF support which applies to all elements of the game except for the trees the issue could also be avoided.

I guess if there was an easy solution you'd be the first to implement it, but I'm not sure if you are aware of the impact of this problem because your benchmarks don't seem to take this into account. Without those costly tree clusters you could decrease the fluctuations in FPS and gain some room for improvements such as the higher vis limit of the recent patch.

We actually tried that but the problems always com in when one player sees something another doesn't I think I'm hidden but I'm not. That's also why the LOD ranges are so far out. Bottom lin is having tank combat available to 3km is just a killer. UGH.

Still any ideas on this commander thing? Is he talking about trees and binos?

I get the same thing sometimes, I attribute it to my wifi connection which sometimes has a packet fart and take a small amount of time to re-connect. If you are using wifi this could be the problem. Also if you are "broaddband" (and this comes from the Rats mouth)it is no longer supported by the game.
