#6266 - Shift then W Sprint Error

If I decide to sprint from standing still, or kneeling, or prone, and I press the Left Shift key and then the "W" key, my avatar won't move. If I release the "W" key and press it again, it still won't move. I have to release the Left Shift key, then press the "W" key, *then* press the Left Shift key in order to sprint.

This has nothing to do with stamina, nor time between prone/standing.

This is purely based upon the order in which I press the Left Shift key and the "W" key.

Left Shift then "W" = no movement at all

"W" then Left SHift = sprint

And when I sprint from prone, and run out of enough stamina for sprint, instead of reducing to a jog, the damn avatar flops on the ground. It should simply reduce to a jog, and flop on the ground when I release the Shift & W keys, which is the way it *used* to be a while back.

Has nothing to do with auto-run.

Hmm, haven't noticed anything different. But, I think I always press W first, before the shift key. Maybe I just never did shift first.

I see it with win7 so not just a mac issue.

1. I have to start a crawl with W then press SHIFT to sprint. Used to press them at the same time.

2. If I use G autowalk and SHIFT for sprint. I'm fine until stamina runs low, then I just drop to the ground. Before this autowalk would just slow to a walk.

I think it's already been reported as a bug.

I don't have that problem, but I don't use default keys.

I do have an issue where if sprinting with either autorun or manual, and I release the forward key or autorun key, then press it again without also releasing and pressing sprint... I can't sprint.

Something is wrong, sometimes L-shift+W works and sometimes it doesn't. At first I thought it was the gamepad that I use since it is old, but same happens when using keyboard directly. Please fix, this is not good.

Windows 7 for me.

This little change or bug is driving me crazy. I always press SHIFT then W to run. Now it only works if W is pressed, then SHIFT. Totally changes the way I play the game, and if it's not a bug, why the heck would someone change this?!

To clarify, I am using Win7, this is not a platform specific bug.

I 9#^@&!^% hate this bug.

Combine this bug to the missing update bug, and there's pretty much a guarantee of death for infantry around AI or an ET.

"The turret was actually facing me, and now tracers are coming!"

"Ahhhh! I can't get out of the prone position!"

"#^&$ I got up but now I can't run!"

"@#$*!!! Dead!"

"F this! Logging for the night!"

FIX !!!! :

GO TO KEYMAPPER

SELECT INFANTRY

GO TO "SPRINT"

CLICK TO ACTIVATE where it says "w+left shift" (click once or you'll set mouse click as selection - if so, just start again at "CLICK TO ACTIVATE")

PRESS YOUR LEFT SHIFT KEY

SAVE

(you should only see "LEFT SHIFT" in the SPRINT field once you are done - this replaces the faulty "w+left shift"...again, you want ONLY left shift in the sprint field.)

The w + left shift fault is a double entry for the "w" walk forward - it's like you pressed "w" twice. - just "LEFT SHIFT" with your finger on the W key will again allow you to sprint as we used to.

Works for me like a charm (Win XP fully updated).

Report in if it works for your Win 7 and/or Mac.

Nicely done! Works for Win 7.

Changed it to only LEFT SHIFT and it toggles perfectly. I never realized the keymapper has a sequential priority for commands. I also tried mapping it to W, LEFT SHIFT and it worked fine if the W is already pressed with SHIFT as a toggle. However, pressing SHIFT then W did not work if it's mapped to W, SHIFT. Changed to only LEFT SHIFT and it works with any combination of W.

Such a simple solution! Thanks, Joker. I wonder what changed to cause the original mappings to not work?

EDIT: Gophur in regard to the bug, it might be worth checking to see if the keymapper is supposed to have sequential priority with commands, or if that changed.

Have the same issue using WinXP .. very, VERY annoying.

Noticed it right off the bat with the last "patch".

Did you try the solution Joker posted?

  • 2 weeks later...

Grr...

The keymapper default is "shift + w" for sprint. Changing this to "shift" fixes this problem.

But then this bug:

  • shift + w
  • release w
  • press and hold w
  • now holding sprint+w but only walking

But then this bug:

  • shift + w

  • release w

  • press and hold w

  • now holding sprint+w but only walking

hit W again and you should go back to normal sprint. Its toggling between 'slow walk' and walk and the shift key only works on the walk portion. Also, make sure you didn't strike the 'tiptoe' key as well.

I have an inbred habit of hitting the shift key prior to the w key, so I may be avoiding this glitch based upon a decade long habit. I'll try it on the live server and report back if this issue is occuring on my rig.

Hitting shift first is precisely the problem that was described in the OP, so you're one of the ones who didn't have this bug.

I haven't logged back on yet so I haven't changed the key mapper as described but others say the solution works.

As for the new issue GOPHUR describes, is there anything new on that?
