A month ago I sometimes didn't see muzzle flashes. When I did see them, they seemed buggy. Sometimes just a tiny point of light. Sometimes (even in bright daylight) the muzzle flash from a rifle would light up a nearby tree like a neon sign. Two weeks ago I often didn't see muzzle flashes. For the past week, I haven't seen a single muzzle flash - not a single one, from any type of weapon. Also, I rarely see tracers now, and that is something that has got gradually worse over the same time period.

Firstly I'd double check you have the latest drivers for your graphics card.

One thing to try, in the preferences , in the video effects setting try turning off muzzle flashes then save the settings. Then go back in and turn them on and save it.

Wondering if somehow your settings had got messed up.

Seems to be a number of visual effects messed up, and the problem seems to have been gradual. The other day I had pink tracer coming from the sky, which was a novel visual experience.

I'll try changing the in-game settings and changing them back again. The drivers weren't that old, but I've updated them from 285.58 to 296.10. I'll test it in-game later and report back with the results.

Sure enough, all the game preference settings were messed up. However, resetting them (plus the driver update) hasn't fixed it. Still not seeing any muzzle flashes. However, it seems I can now see tracers reliably.

Do some controlled testing.

Test 1

  • spawn offline SMG
  • goto the firing range
  • standing at the firing spot hold gun perpendicular to range
  • while firing place clone with the space bar
  • repeat on the firing line with different positions
  • walk outeward until you can't see the muzzle flash
  • post pics here

We'll try and replicate. It sounds though like either the clip plane on the 9800 is fubar or well, I dunno.

I have made the same experiences for month (early beta 1.34) and I have a 9800GT too. I made a test and reported the result month ago.
