In-Flight CTD

Disclaimer- THIS IS NOT:

-FPS drops

-CTHL/Shell host loss

-"Connection to host re-established"

CTD occurs in flight in two areas (for me): Antwerp and Vitry-en-Artois.

For Antwerp, the bug has replicated when flying northbound past Brussels; as I enter 'Twerp airspace, I crash. Crash has been replicated at the same spot 4 times now ~10km within the same spot (it's along the Latitudal lines). It's as if I crash when I pass an invisible line.

For Vitry, the problem is the same - when I pass the Longitudal I crash in the same sector; each crash is when I pass the same arbitrary picket-fence. Exact location is along the line NORTH of Cambrai while flying westward.

Is anybody else experiencing this issue?

note: coords and logs will follow as I get better at tracking them down and when I write the exact co-ords (more probably just grid lines) on the map. On that note, could I get some assistance of what exactly I should be looking for? I suspect this might be a memory leak issue, but I still wouldn't know what to look for. Please and TY! All I know is I can replicate this bug in those areas all the time. I fear flying near there now.

Edit:

Twerp - north side of BI 37-38 line (latitude) -- northbound flight

Vitry - west side of BE-BF 40 line (longitude) -- westbound flight

Those areas. repeatedly. They're my most consistent crash locations. The rest are sporradic. One I think was related to squeezing the trigger, but I can't be sure. /shrug.

Can you keep an eye on your memory consumption and report what you see?

never goes above about 40% iv got 8 gig and a patch that lets the game use 4gig instead of just 2

Hmmm well, maybe it's related or maybe not, but I tried doing a full reinstall of WWIIOL and I haven't had one of these in flight CTDs since. I just get the lovely respawn-CTD most other pilots are getting. Naturally the frequency of that one is random.

So yeah, if you're flying and you crash constantly, try reinstalling the game.

That's not what he's asking.

You need to look at the memory usage of the ww2.exe.

ram.jpg

When that hits 1.7GB you'll crash Out of Memory. This is a memory leak. It makes no difference how much system ram you have in excess of 1.7GB.

This is a known issue. Martini is working on it but having a helluva time finding it. Seems to be repeatable if you fly around enough you'll eventually crash. Some people think it is mostly ATi cards but I've reproduced similar on an nVidia through it did seem to take longer.

If you're seeing something else it would be good to know.

As for the patch for 4GB I don't and won't QA against that.

I'm getting that 1.7GB memory CTD almost every time I change the mission this campaign. Especially when I play ground and switch to air. It must be related to loading of map or something like that. Sometimes when I come near a town, boom.

Yep. Terrain loading. Martini has been working on a lot of memory improvements in 1.35 but hasn't nailed this one yet. Can't seem to find the bugger.

I'll ask for an update.

My money would be on it failing to release memory when a certain object is being removed from your "view" as newer things are being loaded.

Whilst flying this would be happening a lot, and thus the more times that object is load & unloaded your memory useage will increase. However the leak must be VERY small, as I am able to sail around Antwerp for hours without any issues, and I only have 1GB of system ram in my PC, and 256 on my graphics card.

Given my very limited ram, either the object that is causing this isn't visiable from the rivers in and around Antwerp, or the memeory leak is so small that its swapping in and out never pushes me to max my ram.

I guess one test would to be to fly around a area with anly terrain on it, (Far N, s or west of map), and see if mem use still increases. If it does then the object is a terrain one, or bush, tree etc.

If not, repeat the test flying around to and from a town so its being swapped in and out of ram. If mem use increases here, then we know it has to be a town object that is in that perticular town, thus narrowing down what Martini is looking for.
