My game pauses and I CTD quite often recently. Some players have told me to download the 4GB patch for windows to fix it. But from what I read the 4GB patch only works if you are working in 32 bit mode. My windows is working in 64 bit mode so how does this affect me?

Those players are incorrect.

The 4gig patch changes the crash flags in 32 bit programs from 1.7 gig crash to 4 gig crash, ie all 32 bit programs(wwiiol is a 32 bit program) are flagged by windows to crash when mem usage exceeds 1.7 gigs. The 4gig patch changes these flags to crash at 4 gigs mem usage.

You need at least 4 gigs ram to use the patch but it'll work with 32 or 64 windows.

Ah interesting. But I still am curious about the original cause. Because can not remember the client crashed at all when starting playing this game some 3 years ago.

So if the problem we have with the client is caused by a memory leak, then this patch only prolongs the inevitable crash (although have played spawned in for hours with the patch)

Or there is something in the client that do not collect garbage in time for windows to crash it. And in that case this patch makes it possible to play as long as you want (like 3 years ago).

Yes it's a mem leak prob best as I remember.

The cause is a memory leak in the unload terrain function. This is usually only an issue for pilots who load and then unload a lot of terrain. The unload leaves terrain around and bloats the memory until it hits 1.7GB and boom...CTD.

I can spawn in the first time no problem. It's when switching across the map that I crash, although since installing this patch I usually get a series or really long load times for several sorties, then finally crash when jumping across the map again.

So does this increase performance or just alleviate a memory leak issue?

Some players have reported a a little boost in FPS, but the main issue it is fixing is the memory leaks, as it's letting the game use more memory and hence, does not crash as much.

fun:

let the game get close to 1.7GB ( even with 4Gb patch applied) - sit in lobby watching map or just reading chat / going shopping for ~30mins - watch ww2ol.exe memory usage decrease to between 800-900MB again...
