Multiple occasions of ctd on start up

I guess this post isn't that usefull but: i see more and more that newbies try to start playing but they ctd on startup. In forums/ingame on help channel.

The standard responce is update drivers and reinstall game, but this doesn't always work.

Is there any other ideas on how to fix this problem? Not being able to start up a game and not being able to solve it in 10 min or so costs the game a newbie.
