I thought something odd happened here. How can a friendly unit like a Sherman kill me (an SMG)?

it was either:

1. You were in a building that the tank subsequently shelled until it blew (this kills everyone inside, friendly and enemy because it's the building that actually calls the kill on anyone inside)

-or-

2. A database field became corrupted.
