FWIW: Some interesting results/observations from weapons-testing

Did a bunch of test-firing last night with the squad.. here are some observations - and that's all they are: *observations*.

The energy-transfer to bodies seems to be pretty realistic. German ATR does relatively laughable Joule-values compared to the Boyes ATR. My guess is that this is due to the small German ATR-projectile passing through you at an insane speed, thus having little time and not enough mass to transfer a lot of energy into you. While the Boyes fires a larger slug at a slower pace, thus being able to transfer more energy into you.

I did however find that you can shoot and hit an EI with the German ATR at medium range without killing him. Happened to Hastien and me while testing... estimated range was 100 - 130m, shot went to the torso and did not drop him.

- Inf behavior seems much smoother than before. We shot and killed each other a lot and even though I'm half a world away from Hastien, we always died pretty much instantly on each other's FEs. No "delayed" deaths.

- We also tried to replicate the "he shot me from behind/around the corner"-phenomenon, but couldn't quite do it.

- Clipping still is an issue. We tested this on one of those grey farmhouse buildings with the haystack in front of them. Those walls are pretty thick, but I still saw Hastien's boot sticking out through them when he was lying down next to the wall. And yes: You can kill the guy with three SMG-rounds to the boot in this scenario.

- M10's turret still has no floor. I was standing on a church-roof with an M10 underneath, my third hand-grenade went right into the turret but fell through it, dropped out of the lower side of the turret and bounced off the hull. It only exploded after it had fallen out.

- OTOH, a rifle grenade can indeed kill the entire turret-crew on an M10 if you hit it just right from above. It's a bit tricky, but it works.

- Reports about "invincible" trucks don't seem to be based on myth. We did test-firing of Luger vs Beddy at pointblank. My shots came from the side at a 90° angle and were all on the head of the driver (hard to miss at that range), but almost all of them caused no damage at all. The DM-head seems to be smaller than or not completely aligned with the head you see in the game.

However: From 12oc, shot between the eyes of the driver, the Beddy died on the first try.

A side-shot through the door did hit the driver in the torso/hip, but didn't kill him.

Panzer II driver-slit can't be used to kill the driver inside, even if the slit is open and the shooter sprays SMG-fire into it from pointblank. "0 Joules" was all we would get in this setup.

HE-charges can track tanks if you put them in the right place. Putting them onto the tread itself from the front didn't do anything on a Matty. Placing them on the rear sprocket-wheel of a Sherm will blow off a tread with two HE charges.

Putting charges onto a 76mm Sherm's barrel left the gun undamaged - or at least able to still fire.

Bodyparts sticking through walls when laying down has allways been an issue. Nothing in the read me states that this is supposedly fixed either.

Inf lag, death lag, general improvements in the infantry game, yes that is stated as fixed in the read me.

Other then that, good write up of your observations :). I concur, that the infantry game is vastly improved comparing it to 1.34.

Hence my disclaimer about this just being "observations" - not complaints.. :)

BTW: Just remembered that I shot some video during all of this. Here's the latter half of the Beddy-test. You can see bullet-holes already there in the window. All those were exactly where I aimed those previous shots and the Beddy was still alive. When Hastien says "*now* you've hit me" that was the first of all the headshots that caused any damage.

I desperately want to test this with an Opel, but I haven't found a willing target/shooter yet.. :)

Ok.. tested more trucks, namely the Opel and Laffy vs small arms.

Opel's left window and doors seem ok, even though the door seems to absorb a bit too much damage (like on the Beddy). However: The Opel's right window seems to suffer from the same issue as the Beddy's: The driver's head cannot be hit reliably through that window.

The Laffy has even weirder behavior when it comes to the driver's head:

From 12oc, the first pistol shot to the driver's face will kill him. But it's impossible to hit the guy from the side (9oc/3oc) into the head. Emptied my entire Luger-ammo into the head from pointblank range from both sides and my target never registered any damage at all.

Since the driver sits out in the open, I suspect that the hit-zone for the head is to blame here, or rather the shape of it. I imagine it like a sign that offers a large target when viewed from the front but probably very little width when viewed from the side.
