Requesting help to improve inf game

I'd like to reach out to the players I regularly see in my AARs, @anusiya, @smooth12, @jcoleman5, @aceharts, @angie ...surely many (many) others that I can't think of off the top of my head right now. Also a few current Axis players who I know are good at rifleman (definitely a shorter list! I'm using https://stats.wwiionline.com/topplayers.php ) like @thechort, @ohrene (if I'm reading the list right, it seems the only other active players with rifle K/D >= to 2.0 are currently allied).

I'm looking to improve with the plain old bolt-action rifle (my favorite weapon since 2001). What would really help would be if I could spawn in with a player and see firsthand what you're doing that I'm not, as well as general strategy and how different your instincts are from mine (so that I can finally after 16 years go "Ohhhhhh, so THAT's how you're supposed to do it").

I've been trying to look at video, but haven't been able to find anything online put out by the best rifleman players in this game; video would definitely help.

Any help would be immensely appreciated. Feel free to send me a private message if you prefer! Could be that an old dog can't learn new tricks, but I'd like to try.

With humility and respect for all who play this game,

<S>

Wow, kind of honored that you pointed me out. Also kind of astonished that you think allied skill levels are increasing, really wondering what words you'd have to describe us before. Anyways, there are really easy but for some reason unknown ways and tactics to really needle the side you are going against. However, they are Pathfinder (xohorvath, dougyfarm, pfmosquito, among others) secrets, so all I can say is join the Paths! It is no coincidence that you always see Paths peppered along the Top Lists even though we are few in number. Rifleman or SMG, we can do it. But to join that would require you playing allied-only for the campaign :)

Also, congratulations smooth12 on your #1 rifleman.......geez.

syd,

Thanks for the videos!

Kills at those ranges are tricky but definitely do-able, well done! Only thing is that the second video would be impossible with my current hardware. In the old days, I had fps like yours (and even wrote a multi-part performance guide on these very forums many years ago), but these days, in the situations you show, my fps is in the 10-20ish range. It means that cqb situations like the one you start with in that second video are just not an option.

BTW: Really wondering about your HUD elements in the lower right corner in the second video!! At first, I thought you'd dragged the rifle element to only show the range, but then I realized you had other stuff and it seemed completely different. Never seen like anything like that before; where/how did you get it? EDIT: Yep, I figured it out! Creative dragging of the elements. Very nice!

Hmmm..."secrets" sounds a bit fishy... If you want to know the truth about what I've assumed: I figured at least some of the best are playing with certain settings adjusted so that, at the expense of basically all graphics stuff disabled, they have maximum performance and maximum visibility of other players... Obviously not the case with syd (because you can see as much in the videos), but I'm not sure about others. The invite is very much appreciated, but I can't join Pathfinder.

Ah well. I'd ask thecheat, he's a very good player that you mentioned. Watch what he does.

And none of our secrets involve cheating, hacking, or good hardware. They are all tactics and strategy.

Just to clarify:
Not accusing you here of cheating or hacking, and nobody who does well in this game does so without tactics and strategy. I absolutely appreciate that.

About the hardware, just a simple fact that some things can be done at 60 fps that simply, absolutely cannot be done at 10 fps (and you're not doing what you do at 10 fps in this game, that's just a fact). I know because over 10 years ago, I had an obvious framerate advantage over most of the playerbase, and it was easy to kill several players in a row in the span of seconds in tight spaces (have you seen some of my own old videos from back in the day?). In the old days, you could literally run around a player and he'd still be pointing in the opposite direction when you shot him (maybe that's still possible today except I don't realize it because *I'm* the one getting shot now) :P

Framerate luckily doesn't mean *that* much when you're engaging at distance (like in syd's first video), so at least there's that... These days, I try my best to restrict myself to fighting from bushes and behind foliage (can't defend a CP), but I still lose "sniper warz" on a regular basis, so obviously I'm sucking just because I suck on that front...

My FPS is never high as 60 in combat, right now in game it's 25. However, I can't imagine how anyone could have fun playing at 10 fps,

...They get so frustrated that they end up posting threads like this... :P

Just to be clear, it only gets to 10 fps when there's action in a town (like ei spawning in at a depot).

EDIT: The point of this was really just to see if I could get some tips/advice maybe even follow someone in game, not to complain about my fps. Luke Skywalker wasn't above asking Yoda for training!...and that's all I'm doing here, wondering if someone can show me the ropes, that's all, definitely did not want pity (I already regret posting this thread).

Syd has a charmed life for sure.....

I find him one of the hardest targets to get a line on, no accusation here. His motion for me across screen includes unnatural progress some connection issues i suspect but gives a huge advantage. I can always tell its syd just by his moving.

Nice shooting tho. Where the hell is that superzoom !!

1 - Expose the least you can when moving or approaching the enemy, this meaning advancing with a tree in front of you , hiding your approach like with bushes masking your movement.

2 - Scan your surroundings increase your situational awareness

3 - Triangulate the enemy position

4 - Flank your enemy

5 - Move-Rest-Scan-Move don't just run keep running make stop to scan for enemy and wait to catch him on your sights

Being good in WW2ol could be distiled to situational awareness knowing where your are, where the enemy is and what he is doing is like 80% to being good knowing this you can then choose when and how to engage the enemy on your terms that grant you a better chance at winning like flanking..

No.

And then,

"The point of this was really just to see if I could get some tips/advice maybe even follow someone in game"

Followed by,

"The invite is very much appreciated, but I can't join Pathfinder."

It is a mark of excellence to search out those who are closest to it, but I guess you didn't REALLY want what you asked for.  Instead, you suggested it was a 'bit fishy.'  And that is why we do not toss out our pearls willy-nilly.  Or wily-nily5000, as it were.

pbveteran,

Thanks for the feedback! Since plain old vanilla rifleman is the unit I'm interested in improving (and I see you're good with it!), would be cool if I could accompany on a mission when we're both in game some time.

My rifleman stats are slightly inflated (I think my "rifleman" caps are actually my total caps as inf; for whatever reason they're not separated based on class).  I don't think I do anything special as a rifleman other than playing cautiously overall.  I prefer to pick a good building or group of bushes and hold a position, get a few kills, and then rotate around the terrain/town since I know that someone will eventually find me.  I do have a few videos on youtube but they're either paratroop videos or with the semi-auto (which I do play similarly but it obviously allows me to get engage a little closer.

Also Xanthus, you've still got some skill because you killed me by throwing a grenade into the top floor of one of those white factory buildings the other day.  Accurately tossing one of those things is something I still can't do.

@smooth12

Thanks for the feedback!! Coming from you, it means a lot. :)

For whatever it's worth, you've definitely been one of my role models in this game!
S!

BTW: Always a crap shoot when it comes to grenades. I use them often, but typically only get damages. That'll hopefully change once the HE audit comes... ;)

Patience is key.

Remember with every shot you expose your position. Ever wonder why snipers shoot once and move?

Cover and stealth.

The art of shooting, you learn to judge distance and use page up page down to set iron sights in 100m increments. Good for longer shots.

Hold the aim to see where shot lands and adjust accordingly.

Lead your target the further you get out.

Use crawl to move and again be patient.
