Wonder if there is an ability to add a hook prior to authentication that could check wether the server is active (then continue to authentication) or down for maintenance (and provide a message or reason why)?

Well in fairness, many many players do not actually come to the forums.

One way to handle this is when server is down, have auth roll over to an auth_server_down process or what not that instead of showing the normal news items
shows the server state message, like server down for upgrades 8/3/2010, expected outage is several hours.
 

Playgate does attempt to take the user to a URL after the failed attempt though, but the URL is missing on the web server.
And also sometimes playgate does not decide to go there
Alternately could fix that and would serve same purpose or better
