During the desperate days of the Abberville defense, Slamen took to the offensive by attacking the enemy where it hurt them the most, their FB's. Though under heavy fire and suffering many casualties, Slamen went on to lead the charge on the two western most fbs and secure the southern part of the town. For his efforts, he has been awarded the One Star Good Service Medal.
