Smartheap Error

I get a "SmartHeap (Memory ?)" msg and CTD randomly during the game.

The message in the box says "Out of Memory"

This never happened prior to the 1.30 patch, and has happened since the recent patch 1.301 as well

Does SmartHeap have anything to do with how the virtual memory is handled? I've noticed that, it's a serious issue, my FPS have taken a monster dump since 1.30 came out. Since the last patch 1.30.1 my fps improved marginally, however it degraded quickly to the point I had to log off. When I exited the game I noticed windows xp telling me I was out of virtual memory. I seem to remember a similar problem back in 2002, or so, where I had major lag issues and my virtual memory was eaten alive.

BTW I use AMD Athlon 4200+ Manchester

and ATI 1990 Pro 256meg: Driver 8.3

since changing some of my settings, (ill have to write them down), I have not experienced this memory issue anymore. But, I'm not without issues (the others are probably unrelated)

I'll update on what I had before vs. what I have now.

Here are my settings that seem to have resolved the smartheap issue. But keep in mind I am currently CTD'ing to desktop immediately after I RTB in some situations.

Be really nice to know which one it is. I bet on the water shaders. If we figure that our we win. If you get to playing with them again and can pinpoint it I'd love to know which one is the culprit.

I also had this a couple times, very random. Once the colors went all screwy in game, like max brightness, and then smartheap error... I can alt-tab out and click ignore, and it goes away a few times, but eventually my colors get so screwed up the only fix is to reload the game.

I'm running vista. Never had this before 1.30

I put this in another thread, but the more exposure we get for this issue the better.

I'm a new player and I really, really wanna play but can't due to all the errors.

Vista 64-Bit

Quad Core 2.4GHz processor

8GB RAM

768MB GeForce 8800GTX (with latest 185. drivers)

Getting smartheap after smartheap error, I'm lucky if I can play for 15 minutes before getting one.

Out of memory? With 8 gigs of ram? Seriously? I even disabled that SuperFetch to see if it was an issue with memory caching but that didn't help.

I really want to play this game. Heelp! I did send the information along with my dxdiag to the support email address.

same here...smartheap mem usage

All tuned to best performance...so I can catch this bug and figure out were it comes from.

3 gigs RAM freezes at 2.2 gig, pressed ignore and continued to play, but then it kept giving me the same error(smartheap)...

Not sure but I think the mini-map was causing my problem, Today I'm gonna try turning off the mini-map...

If not then I'm gonna keep tryin to figure this Bug...

Tiny Vista 32-bit

1950pro(ver 9.3)

3gig Ram

Again the strangest thing is.. when the game "runs out of memory" there is still 25% physical memory left free!!!

Another observation - I ONLY get the crash on despawn. NEVER when actually "live" in a sortie.

yeah that accounts for 99% of mine as well.

Can anyone of you people getting this smartheap error afford to do a clean reinstall of OS and the game and see if this cures it?

I sure would rather not. This has ONLY sprung up after 1.30.x.

Upped page file from 4GB to 6GB. Gonna see if that does anything.

what a joke .. it isnt most people computers that is the problem .. it isnt a ram problem ..

It is a memory leak that has been in the game since day 1 and no one can find

Possibly but not probably. There are some memory issues to be certain in any program of this complexity and age and Smart Heap does a pretty good job of detecting them and fixes a lot of stuff but if it happens to one person all the time and not to others it is a systemic problem that has a correlation to a machine setup. Otherwise everyone would have it all the time.

You can't investigate that without finding out the hardware (or software) commonality that isn't shared with other machines.

If we could nail it down, we could fix it. To do that we have to try odd things.

Is this the first time you have customized your system settings? There could be a correlation between some "tweaks".

I've seen people tweak their MTU and end up with "unexplained" CTDs.

My page file is set to 2046 - 4092 for example. Recommend trying system managed to see if that addresses the problem.

Hmm, only on despawn, well I'll add that to the mix.

I really want all of you to try this in the 1.31 beta even if we get it fixed before then. Big code base change there.

I installed 1.30. NO changes to system since 1.29, when I was fine. None.

Had memory crash problems.

To try to improve performance, I changed my vid card to FSAA off. Seemed to make FPS worse, turned FSAA back on.

Still memory crash problems.

Switched Vista login from "Administrator" to "Standard User" and increased perforamnce.

Still memory crash.

Upped PF from 4GB/4GB to 6GB/6GB.

Still memory crash.

It happens most quickly when there's a lot of combat going on. Always on despawn. Sometimes I can click "ignore" and it lets me keep playing for a bit. But eventually I despawn again, try ignore, and it crashes.

ok guys, I have *knock on wood* not had any smartheap related crashes since my last post of when I adjust my settings (which are detailed on my last post)

I also recently updated my Direct-X and updated to most recent ATI drivers v8.612 and I have not experienced any smartheap crashes.

Am I still crashing? Yes occasionally, usually during respawn, but right now I am not getting smartheap errors which was the topic of this thread.

hatch I want you to play with your settings as well. One of them is causing an error. if I can find which one, I can fix it.
